I have been told, by a Timeshare re-seller, that if bought our Roayal Haciendas timeshares from the developer, that we can buy "Getaway Weeks" that can be used at many resorts. Is anybody aware of this. (Hard to trust these re-sellers)

I got my answer from our original sales person. It is legitimate, and very inexpensive. I bought 24 weeks, and ready to start planning the weeks.

Someone called me offering $25K to buy my timeshare that original I bought $15K from the developer. Logically, this is a scam. Why not the interested party buy $15K directly from the developer?

What are these and where can you use them? We bought all of our Royal Resort weeks from the developer. We own at the Haciendas and the Sands

Obviously, a scam.

But it's amazing that people send money off into cyberspace to pay upfront fees after getting cold calls like that. Money that will never be seen again.

Gather they can be used at any of the Royal Resorts, or RCI's. You can't just pick the weeks you want, they list the weeks that are available. But, they are inexpensive.

Sometimes they are and sometimes they are not. You are not going to find available inventory during prime time with the exception perhaps of some over $1200 per week developer getaway inventory.

Because the scammer is assuming that the sales people who sold you this convinced you that:
1) You were buying one of the last few available.
2) This offer (from the sales person) was "good for today only" because these timeshares are flying like hotcakes.
3) The product, like any real estate, is going to increase in value.
4) The timeshare and travel industry are "hot" right now with no end in sight of the increasing demand for vacation ownership.
5) You happened to be in the right place at the right time with the right circumstances in life to qualify for this amazing offer.

After all, isn't that what timeshare salespeople try to convince buyers of?

By the way, the GetAway Weeks are legitimate, this was the scam from the reseller, BPS Marketing LLC, asking me to wire them the money to buy the weeks, while they had the buyer in their office. They could get it processed because of the listing agreement that I had signed. Fell for it hook, line and sinker. I learn everyday, not everyone can be trusted.

Well, I guess me filing a complaint with the FBI, FTC, State Attorney General, New Jersey Real Estate & Banking Division, Consumer Protection Agency, local District Attorney and police may have got BPS Marketing LLC's attention. THEY ARE "SUPPOSEDLY" SENDING ME A REFUND"! I know, I am not getting excited, and have legal help on this one. Stay tuned, I may be apologizing for my remarks, or telling you "it must have been a dream".

Whenever I read of these scams, and of people contacted by ts scammers, my only question is this: how did they get your contact number, and know you were a ts member? It's a rhetorical question actually. You must be putting too much info out on the web for anyone to do a quick phone search, and then call you. Or, worse, you posted your phone number somewhere on the web. In any case, not a good idea, imho.

Some companies, like Vistana actually put your contract number on the deed that is recorded at the county. Resale deeds don't have it, but if you follow the chain of title back to the original deed, the same contract number is there since they never change the contract number when it gets sold to subsequent buyers. Deeds are often include your mailing address, which can easily be used to turn up a phone number. Also, often, insiders steal data from their timeshare employer and sell it to scammers.

It would be very interesting to learn the breakdown of these scammer contacts, based on the methods you provided, and members simply too free with their PI on the web. Of course, this isn't going to happen. In the meantime, ts members/everyone else would be wise to watch out with how much info they share with the internet world.

Below is a tiny fragment from a popular website commonly recommended to rr members to use. Too small to read, but trust me, more personal information on this tiny sample than a person could believe. Names, addresses, weeks of membership, telephone numbers, email addresses, etc. This one website could serve (is serving?) as a ts scammer clearinghouse.

Unfortunately, scamming has become a profession, and not unique to timeshares. I live north of Houston, and the newspaper is "full" of rental, insurance and construction scams. I just read an article that fewer companies are accepting cashier checks, because they are so easy to counterfeit. My scam started with a link on a trusted website.
Just wait to see what happens as a result of the millions of identities hacked from Equifax start flowing through the system.

Exactly, great points.

That is why it is incumbent on everyone to perform their due diligence to minimize or eliminate scams or fraud from affecting them. That is inclusive, and encompasses everything from your phone number, to your timeshare to your credit. No, of course you cannot protect every shred of PI, however, you can do a lot to minimize your exposure.

Since the manner that information flows hasn't changed overnight, no one should be oblivious to the exposure they are subject to. However, as you see in my single example above, countless people are exposing themselves, and are apparently oblivious to the ramifications. Or, they simply don't care. Funny, those are typically the first to complain and whine, after the fact.

How many here have frozen or locked their credit since the data breach of Equifax? I did, but long before the breach ;)
