So sad, I saw it on the Washington Post; many other news agencies reporting it too.
Cars are new terrorist weapon.

Horrific attack! Large van- like a Sprinter- zig-zagging 600 meters along Las Ramblas to hit the most pedestrians. More than a dozen dead so far with many more serious injuries hospitalized. The toll will increase. Always be on the alert- especially in crowds and places where your attention is diverted.

Damn! A favorite timeshare memory. A week in Cambrils. For those unfamiliar, it's a smallish town with 1st Century Roman ruins and a great Mediterranean beach. At least 3 starred Michelin restaurants, and wonderful, friendly people. No car needed, on a walk down the seaside promenade where the horrific attack took place, I saw the local distributor pumping table wine into faux barrels for the day's sales. We day-tripped to Barca, Montserrat, Valencia. hen followed this with a hotel stay on Las Ramblas in Barca, then a great Transatlantic cruise. It's one of our favorite memories. My heart goes out to the wonderful people of Barcelona. I'm wearing my FCBarcelona #10 Messi jersey as I write this.

Our sympathies and support to the people of Barcelona and to all those and their families, from many countries, who were killed, injured or affected by this horrendous attack on free peoples. Alcanar, Spain - Spain Attackers Had Stored Over 100 Gas Tanks to Use

"Alcanar, Spain - A top Spanish police official says those behind the attacks on pedestrians had stored more than 100 gas tanks and explosive ingredients at a house in Alcanar that they accidently blew up.

Police official Josep Lluis Trapero told reporters at a news conference Sunday that the radical cell of 12 people “had planned one or more attacks with explosives” in Barcelona. The cell rented three vans and also used a car and motorcycle.

He said ingredients of the explosive TATP, which has been used by Islamic State extremists in other attacks, were found at the home in Alcanar that was destroyed Wednesday, along with more than 100 butane gas tanks. He says “that makes us think this is the place where they were preparing the explosives.”

He says the search for a missing fugitive has been complicated because authorities haven’t been able to positively identify the human remains at the house in Alcanar."

Hero Police Officer Who Gunned Down Cambrils Terrorists Is Former Special Forces Soldier

"The hero police officer who shot dead four terrorists as they attacked innocent civilians with knives and an axe, is a former special forces soldier who was working overtime, it has emerged.

The married father, who has not been named for security reasons, served with the Legion - an elite infantry unit of the Spanish army.

He was highly trained in firearms and marksmanship during his time in the unit.

After leaving the armed forces he joined the Catalan police force Mossos d’Esquadra, where he had hoped to have a more stable and less dangerous life.

The hero officer usually works on patrol giving advice to shopkeepers and talking to schools about safety and security.

He was not meant to be on duty on Thursday night, but agreed to work overtime, to beef up security, after the attacks earlier that day in Barcelona.

As his patrol monitored the promenade in the coastal resort of Cambrils, 75 miles from Barcelona, five terrorists drove into the resort intent of causing further death and destruction.

Driving at high speed the jihadis ploughed an Audi A3 into pedestrians on a promenade before crashing into a police checkpoint - overturning the vehicle and injuring one officer.


The terrorists, who were wearing fake suicide vests, then jumped out armed with an axe and knives.

But using his army training and experience, the quick-thinking officer pulled his weapon and shot dead four of them, probably saving dozens of lives.

The fifth terrorist manage to get away and stabbed a woman in the neck before being shot dead by another officer...."

Van Driver in Barcelona Attack is Shot, Police Say

"SUBIRATS, Spain — The fugitive who was behind the terrorist attacks last week in Spain was shot by police officers on Monday afternoon in a village about 20 miles west of Barcelona, the police announced.

The fugitive, Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, used a van to mow down a crowd on Las Ramblas, Barcelona’s most famous boulevard, on Thursday afternoon, killing 13 people, according to the police. He then stole a car, killed its driver and made his getaway, with the driver’s body still inside.

A manhunt stretching across Europe was undertaken, and France, Italy and other countries tightened security and border controls amid widespread speculation that Mr. Abouyaaqoub might have fled Spain; over the weekend, the authorities said they could not be certain that he was still on Spanish soil.

But at 4:10 p.m. Monday, attention quickly turned to Subirats, a collection of villages about 20 miles west of Barcelona. The town was placed on lockdown as the authorities announced that a man wearing an explosive belt had been “shot down,” but it was not immediately clear if he was killed...."

On a second look, she told the police when she phoned in the tip, she had “no doubt” he was the fugitive suspected of driving the van in last week’s terrorist attack in Barcelona.

Two police officers in the area closed in and cornered the suspect, Younes Abouyaaqoub, 22, along a road that winds its way up through this wine region west of the city.

As soon as they did, he opened his jacket to reveal what looked like a suicide belt — which turned out to be fake — and shouted, “Allah is great.” The officers shot him dead...."
