We will be driving from either Newport Coast or Palm Desert to Lake Tahoe. It is a long drive so we are hoping for a place about 1/2 way there. What hotels do people recommend? Not much is showing up online.
I'd recommend The Village Lodge in Mammoth Lakes, California. Mammoth Lakes is mainly known for its proximity to Mammoth Mountain, one of the best and largest ski resorts in California. But it's also beautiful in the spring and summer, and a nice resort town to make a one-night pitstop in. A fun place to eat is Stellar Brew and Deli. Great craft beer selection and excellent food in a fun atmosphere.
Assuming you are driving up 395, the places about half way there are Lone Pine and Bishop, both of which have only budget motels. These would be the best mid-point pit stops. Also, between the two is the Mazanar internment cap, a National Historic site, with a good historical exhibit.
If you're looking for a quick one night stopover, there is a Holiday Inn Express in Bishop that is clean and offers breakfast. It's also very near Schat's bakery, which is a fun place to visit. Pick up some one day old bread or pastries at the bakery.
If you want something a bit more upscale, check out the Bishop Creekside Inn.
If you like BBQ, stop at Copper Top in Big Pine (just south of Bishop). Probaby the best BBQ I have ever had.
