TUGgers,

I would appreciate your advice on some travel plans. We are planning a Europe trip in summer 2018, and I'm woefully out of date on how to maximize award mileage. In the old days, I was loaded with American points and would simply book FF award travel on AA. Alas, no AA miles anymore.

What I do have is through the Chase Sapphire card, where I have about 300,000 points. I have lots of points on Hawaiian (600,000?), but I don't think that's going to help me here.

Complicating this is that this will be multi-city travel. I need 3 passengers to outbound from San Diego to London and return from Rome to San Diego.

I need 2 passengers to go from Miami to Rome and return from Rome to San Diego.

I appreciate any and all suggestions. Thank you!

Best,

Greg

Greg, sounds like a fun trip. Does Hawaiian have partners on which you can book flights using Hawaiian miles? We did that with our Alaska miles when we flew AA to Ireland and British Air back from Spain. Also on Qantas from LA to Sydney and back from NZ. I am not familiar with HA partners, but that may be an option.

Best regards.

Greg,

Interestingly, we are doing similar trip this summer. Seattle to london then Venice and finally to Istanbul. Then from Istanbul back to Seattle.

I ended up booking 4 tickets last Dec SEA-LHR then LHR-VCE and IST-SEA on united.

All of these were purchased using 60K miles & $173 (taxes) via chase rewards. It mostly uses Lufthansa (my favorite airline). This is what United calls open-leg ticket which comes with a single connecting leg for free (LHR to VCE).

Then we purchased 4 tickets VCE to IST (about $100 each) using Turkish air. United will pick us up from Ist back to Seattle.

Initially we were all together but then we had to split into 2 groups to come early for my son collage summer classes. United waved the change fee for 2 of the tickets.

You should be able to do same. Just use united website or call as they will help. you need to choose multi-citi search. Some flexibility may be needed.

Sam
