Gas up a quarter almost overnight? Wassup? I think I know.

Gas prices have been sitting pretty stable at about $2.35 give/take $.05 for weeks- if not months. Then about 2 weeks ago, POOF- up 7 cents- then another nickel a few days later, and on and on. Yesterday nearly a dime up. So today the neighborhood station- that usually has about the lowest price around is at $2.60/gal. And the Newspaper headline screams, "AAA Says Buy Eclipse Gas NOW". Coincidence? I think not. We're about 100 miles from the 'path of totality, and about the last good size town for those headed that way. The question will be if the price drops, and how much and how fast after the event and the hundreds of thousands of shadow chasers go back home.

I had to read this twice, since where I live in Missouri, gas prices have actually been stable over the past week or two around here. Here's a handy web page by AAA to check. Just click your state on the map to check. There is a little news link on the top of the page that mentions that prices are up slightly for most of the country.

Today’s national average price for regular unleaded gasoline is $2.35 per gallon, which is flat on the week, nine cents more than one month ago, and 22 cents more than last year.

The price of oil has stabilized between $45-$50 per barrel and will probably stay in that range for a long time unless there is an international event of terrorism or war that causes instability in the markets. The price each city or state sees changes because of refinery problems or transport problems causing a temporary shortage or government regulations causing companies to increase their price to cover cost. Other price changes might be caused by your local gas stations trying to increase business with short term price reductions. The price might jump around, but it should not move very far unless something big happens. The Eclipse thing is over rated and should not have a major impact. Maybe you can save $1 on a tank of gas, but don't spend a lot of time chasing that. The price will return to normal within a few days after that is all over. Here is a link to the market price of oil.

Probably won't drop too much, as they need to gouge Labor Day travelers.

Michigan goes through this every week. There is only I-75 that goes North and South so every Friday the price shoots up and every Monday it drops again. Price gouging at its best.

In Myrtle Beach right now and when we crossed over into SC we started seeing DOT signs saying be prepared for Eclipse traffic. Depending where you are it is a very big deal.

Our gas in the Midwest is now up to $2.53 a gallon. Something is definitely up

In the last month, Brent Crude went from $45 to $53. That is over a 10 percent increase, so gas at you local station is hitting a high. Some say oil will go to $60, but if that happens, the drillers or frackers will turn on more pumps or wells and cause to much supply causing the price to fall again. But up 10 percent in one month is about right. In the past year the price hit the upper $50s and fell again.

You could buy gas yesterday for $2.06 at Sam's Club. I wonder if it increased today? It's been pretty steady here for the last few weeks.
