Emuyshondt is correct the owners having only one unit will have more strict cancellation policies than hotels, and in Hawaii their policies are even more strict because most people plan way ahead making it difficult to re-rent a condo even with two months notice. One big advantage of using VRBO over a name brand timeshare when you are renting is often price. I know for example Hilton has a very active rental program of their timeshare units on the Big Island(Kingsland, Bay Club, etc) which are in the Waikoloa resort, but you should be able to rent through VRBO a condo of very similar quality for close to $100 dollars less per night. It will be more work to find a good one, but the savings should be significant for a months rental.
Also, do not expect a deal in Hawaii in February and March. Most owners could rent their unit several times over during that time period and there is no incentive to reduce price. Many if not most nice places available at a fair price will already be rented now for February and March 2018 as well.

Where do you own, and how many of you are going?

I'm going to Ko Olina (Marriott) for a month this summer. We own 2 weeks, so we locked off. Just me and my 18 year old are using the studio for 2 weeks, then my husband and our 20 year old are joining us for another 2 weeks. We had to add on 2 more nights in a one bedroom at the end to get decent flights with airline miles. I know they'll try to keep us in the same units, so we will definitely move once from the studio to the one bedroom, and there is a possibility of moving again. It is easier on housekeeping, though, to not move us, but we're prepared if we have to.

I'm actually starting to window shop for homes, as we are definitely thinking about moving back to Oahu in the next 5 - 10 years.
We own credits with Worldmark. I think I will try to piece together 3 or 4 weeks through flex change and tug owners :) I know it takes a lot of work.
