1) Where do you want your home resort to be? Don't really know. We live in Texas. Looking for family vacations visiting new places.

2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time? Trade. Want to visit new places.

3) What are your 5 top trade destinations? Colorado, Florida, Oregon, California, New England.

4) How many people do you usually travel with? 5-7

5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule? For next 3 years school schedule. After that more flexible.

6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance? Yes.

7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time? Absolutely.

8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars? 3-5

9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing? Can and need are different. Would not finance for travel.

10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year? Again, can vs need.

11) Are you a detail oriented planner? Very much so.

12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do? Yes.

Regarding questions 9 and 10 -- the angle is to see if you are being reasonable in your expectations. As an example, some will say they want 5-star accommodations, mandatory 2BR unit, peak ski week, but only want to budget $500/year for dues. Unreasonable, right?

Given your stated group size (5-7 persons), you might require either a 3BR unit or multiple units as the typical occupancy for a 2BR unit is 6 people. The particular sleeping arrangements should also be considered as that might set some specific requirements of the unit configuration.

Worldmark, a points based system with ~90 locations, has in-network destinations in the areas you've identified except New England. It trades through both RCI and II -- so, perhaps the New England locations could be addressed via exchange. For a 3BR unit, full week in high season, you'd likely want to start at 15000 Worldmark credits (aka points) which currently runs $1189/year in dues. The number of points required for each stay depends on the unit size, season and specific location. Newer resorts tend to require more points than the 'legacy' locations w/in the system. As you look around the Worldmark resort gallery, consider only the Worldmark locations not the various affiliates. Be sure to drill down to the 'resort info' page for location photos, room types, point cost tables, etc.

As a 'bonus,' WM has a few locations likely w/in driving distance from your home for getaways. The system is quite flexible allowing short stay bookings, cash rate reservations, etc. No 'home resort,' lots of locations to visit, strong presence across the western states. I hope you give it a look. :)

Best wishes on your research!
