One in Four Ryanair Passengers Forced to Put Cabin Bag in the Hold
By Oliver Smith/ Digital Travel Editor/ Travel/ News/ The Telegraph/ telegraph.co.uk

"Up to a quarter of airline passengers are being forced to place their carry-on luggage in the hold, potentially putting uninsured valuables at risk, despite their bags meeting size and weight restrictions.

According to a Which? Travel study, Ryanair has the worst record of eight major airlines, with 26 per cent of fliers reporting that their cabin bags were taken from them because of a lack of space in overhead lockers.

For easyJet passengers, the figure falls to 15 per cent, while 11 per cent of Aer Lingus and seven per cent of Monarch passengers can expect to find their carry-on bags put in the hold..."

Yeah, it's called charging for checked baggage.

And yeah, I understand the free market system that airlines are businesses and try to find ways of making money such as charging for checked baggage (and some are charging for carry-ons too), but I guess charging for checked baggage probably has reduced the amount of luggage in the holds.

...and increased the amount of luggage in the overhead bins.

It makes more sense to me for airlines to charge for carry-ons placed in the overhead bins and allow checked luggage to go for free. This would reduce the amount of "stuff" brought on board and allow for faster boardings and deplanings.

My daughter and I have this on going joke. Every morning when I grab her heavy school backpack I tell her "If you fly Ryanair you're going to have to buy a ticket for that backpack."

My British Air tickets were cheaper then Ryanair when you calculated all the additional cost. Plus Ryanair wanted to charge me $100 for each of kids very small violins. The violins are so small that BOTH violins together fit under a single airplane seat. And they are very lightweight.

Consider that even while paying for checked baggage, you are paying less than a ticket than you did before deregulation, NOT adjusting for inflation.

The airlines play a game to be able to advertise a lower fare. We always factor the bag cost when we make a purchase decision. That Southwest flight doesn't look higher than Spirit once we factor in a checked bag each. And after I sat three hours in a Spirit seat that reminded me of a McDonald's, I won't fly them again.
