I'm looking for recommendations for reef friendly sun tan lotion. I think you can get it once we get to Maui, but I'd like to have something in our bags. I know you can buy online, but I want something that doesn't have a strong scent. I have a long sleeve rash guard for snorkeling, but need something for the legs and back of neck

I stirred the pot quite a bit in another thread on this topic. Best response in the entire debate was by another TUG member

"... I use a Danish product, P20 is the product name, it is sold all through Europe. I buy it on amazon or when I am traveling to Europe. You put it on ONCE a DAY, yes you read that correctly. Good for 10+ hours and it is EXTREMELY Waterproof. I go on the Tradewinds Cruising vacations frequently, I put it on once a day. I scuba dive, snorkel, and I am on boat. I don't get burnt. I eventually get a tan. But once a day is so much easier. It is more like an oil that is easily absorbed by the skin. It is not cheap, but it is cheaper than applying sunscreen 4 or 5 times a day when you are in the sun and/or swimming for a 10+ hour day.

Hope this is a helpful solution.

That was me. I have been using it for about 7 or 8 years now. I swear by it.

I just decided to order some on amazon. Discontinued by manufacturer, so if you want it now's your chance

According to the P20 website, http://www.p20.co.uk/faqs/, all variations contain Hydroxybenzoyl and Octocrylene, which are two chemicals that are *not* reef safe (e.g., http://www.vogue.com/article/reef-safe-sunscreens-oxybenzone-free-sea-turtles-environment-stream2sea - edit, better link http://www.haereticus-lab.org/protect-land-sea-certification/).

It likely is just a distributor and not the manufacturer.

As far a reef friendly products, Of the ones I have tried, and there were several, and not a one works well as a sunscreen.

Sorry. I obviously misunderstood about this product from the other thread. Thanks for the informative link.

I think I did mention it not being reef safe but being effective and compact (since you don't have to use much of it) so when sailing/swimming it works well given the amount of exposure you get per day. I also travel on a sail boat, and traveling light is a serious requirement. I have tried unsuccessfully some reef safe sunscreens that did work or that my skin didn't like. Not sure what product in the reef friendly I am reacting too. It might be the zinc that is an issue for me.

Oh, I remember reading the same thing in the other thread and thinking "I must have this!" But then I got around to researching it, and forgot to come back and post about it.

The worst part is there are problems with everything. The best bet is likely a zinc product, but not nano-zinc. So you'll end up white.

Actually, I think the best thing I did for sun protection is bought a burkini. Seriously. When I saw them on the news last summer, I took one look and said "pale, red-head me NEEDS that!" Found a couple on ebay that were short sleeved (more like a dress and leggings), and wore them all over Chincoteague last summer and St. Thomas last winter - awesome! Although that does do anything for the guys ;-) I'm kind of hoping I'm on the upside of the trend... (if anyone is interested, I found them on ebay. You have to dig through the listings to find ones that aren't total coverage, like this one (which is one I have) http://www.ebay.com/itm/MODEST-SEA-...hash=item58f6fd7a8d:m:mMgzkBtZQ_Ncf1RNuzH3YTw)

:) Didn't say you didn't say it, just that I "obviously misunderstood". :) This is what happens when one skims (rather than reads) another posts. I was so fed up with that discussion in the other thread that I truly was skimming
