We are heading to Breckenridge for 10 days and are finding car rentals in Denver pretty expensive. Does anyone have any tips or ways around it. Looks like rentals off airport are similar in price. We considered shuttles from the airport to Breckeridge and then using ubers and day rentals but not sure with the shuttle price if that would save much. We most likely will just have to pay the going rate but thought I'd check with folks first to see if anyone had suggestions.

Are you going during ski season? Aside from this time of the year, we have gotten some very good rates from DIA. Did you try AAA or frequent flyer discounts? I would keep checking as car rental rates change often.

We are going next week so that may be the issue. Last summer we drove from Tucson but we don't have enough time off this time. I just heard there was a recent hail storm that took a lot of cars out of commission

You may have just answered your own question--a short window before your trip, coupled with a temporary short supply due to the hailstorm. One thing you might consider: call the major rental companies and tell them you don't mind driving a car with some hail damage. Maybe they'd give you a reduced rate. A second idea: have you ever used Hotwire for car rentals? I have done this often, and gotten some very nice cars through them. The only catch is that you don't know what car rental company you're working with until after you commit.

We are using auto slash, put in a while back and expected some reductions in their quote as the time approached. We have had great luck with them in the past, but I will check Hotwire, have not used them for car rentals before. If not we are going to shuttle to Breckenridge from the airport and use a combo of uber, and daily car and bike rentals once there. We have friends joining us for 4 of the 10 days. Thank you for your suggestions, much appreciated!

For what it's worth, I'm finding a Full size car on Hotwire for $47/day, including taxes at DEN. It's not the cheapest I've ever seen, but far from exorbitant.

If you get a chance, take a day trip over to the hot springs pool in Glenwood Springs. It's a beautiful drive and makes for a great day. Relax in Vail for drinks/dinner on the way back to Breck.
Another great day trip is Grand Lake and over the mountain to Estes Park.

We also love the drive to Glenwood Springs. And Sylvan State Park near Eagle is a short ways off the interstate and is beautiful.

Try Costco. We've been having good luck with them. Also the Flyertalk.com website has some useful rental codes in their forums. Good Luck

I will be interested in hearing your impressions of Breckenridge and HMSS. We just passed ROFR on a 3BR fixed unit/week 4 (ski week) with a floating summer week and 3 day mud season (which we hope to use in the Fall.). I hope you enjoy Breck as much as we do!

Enjoy!! Our annual 5 week summer trek with our daughter and 3 grand daughters was canceled this summer because she had twins two weeks ago. We normally spend a day or two in Denver, them up to Casper, Wy. for a week visiting family, then pick up son in law in Bozeman and 10 days in Butte, Bigfork, Helena and Glacier; then down through Red Lodge and Cody; another week in Casper, then a week in Breckenridge; and then back to the Texas heat. Next summer there will be eight of us in the Odyssey..

I used to get altitude sickness. The last 2 times we've gone, I didn't and I attribute it to the B-12 tablets I've started taking. This year we landed from MSY (below sea level) and went directly to the mountains. No problem.

OK I'm getting some B-12 tomorrow. Thank you! I did get my Dr to call me in a prescription but I am always nervous about trying a new medication, so am hesitant about it. I've gone so many times my whole life to mountains and never gotten it before . Maybe it's just one of those aging things lol!

Tucsonadventurer, if you get a chance could you let me know your opinion of how HMSS is being maintained? We were last there three summers ago, hopefully it's still as nice as we remembered it....

Mary Ann, we always rent an SUV at DEN and the rates have always been very reasonable, but we never go during ski season.

Wow that is a great deal! We are paying 515 for 10 days. I have found that it is those extra few days over a week that raise the prices. It's always better to do 1 or 2 weeks vs 10 days but we are stringing together 2 three day weekend stays with a 4 day midweek stay. We were extremely fortunate to be able to get all 3 reservations together to beat the 100 plus, degree days here in Tucson!

Taxes renting at DEN are what kills the rental. And you have to pay them renting anywhere in the Denver area if you pickup the car within 24 hours of landing (so no benefit renting offsite). Our trick (end of July) - we have an economy for two days in Denver, then we trade it in for a SUV to head to Breckenridge. That is $288 cheaper than renting the SUV for 9 days at DEN. But that works because we are staying the Boulder for two day before heading to Breck. The economy car for two days is $143!!

We are currently in a 2 bedroom , room 4403 . We started in a studio for 3 days. I am even more impressed with HMSS this summer. The studio was extremely spacious as is the 2 bedroom. Jody the Hyatt manager is a gem. They are at full capacity but she has still tried to make our move from studio to 2 bedroom as seamless as possible, and was receptive to finding us rooms with a view. As far as maintenance there were only minor issues which were resolved immediately. We had a TV in our guest bedroom that didn't work, 1/2 hr later it was in operation, a tub that didn't drain, again quickly fixed. One of our guests has a cane and poor balance and we were worried that the guest bathroom had a tub that had a slippery surface. Were were nervous he would fall and asked for a bath mat or sticky adhesive for the tub. Later that evening they delivered a brand new bath mat. They had said they didn't have any but I think they actually sent someone out to get us one. We had never used the Hyatt shuttle before as we love to hike/walk and bike but while our guest was up, we used it frequently to get around town. They do a great job. Let me know if you have any other questions. We are loving it here. The weather is perfect with about an hour of rain each day around 3 ish, then clearing up for the evening. I will write a review with more details when we get back to town. There look to be quite a few units for re-sale still.

Thanks for the update! Breck in July/August is wonderful. Concerts, arts and craft shows, and fantastic weather. I definitely remember the afternoon showers.. Hope you have a memorable trip!
