My wife and I have stayed here for the last three years and have thoroughly enjoyed our time. We are debating whether or not to purchase a week via resale. For those of you own timeshares, what would you say are the pros and cons of purchasing a timeshare vs. just renting them from owners on TUG or Redweek?

You should ask the mod to move your post to the Vistana forum, but to get you started, here are some pros and cons of owning.

Pros:
  • If you can plan a year ahead, you can book your week/view at a lower cost than renting
  • If you reserve a high demand week, you can rent it for more than maintenance fees
  • You may feel obligated to continue vacationing every year in Maui! ;)
  • It's a mandatory resort, so you may use StarOptions to book other Vistana network resorts
Cons:
  • Hefty resale purchase price
  • It's a long term commitment to high annual MF's ($2,6,23 for 2017) due EVERY January
  • MF's and (Maui taxes) go up every year (The Maui County Council has a contentious relationship with the resort)
  • If you can't plan travel at least 8 months out, the only way to get a guaranteed view is to rent from an owner who booked early
