Hi everyone. My wife and I are considering buying into a timeshare/vacation club. We're looking for some advice from those more experienced than us. Answers to the newbie questions below.
1) Where do you want your home resort to be?
I don't particularly care.
2) Do you want to visit your home resort at least half the time, or do you want to trade more than half the time?
We want to trade most of the time. I doubt we'll visit any individual location more than a couple times.
3) What are your 5 top trade destinations?
Florida, Europe (particularly Italy), the Caribbean, Hawaii, and something within driving distance of Michigan in case we don't want to pay for plane tickets some years.
4) How many people do you usually travel with?
Me, my wife, and two kids.
5) Can you travel any time, or are you locked into the school schedule?
We can currently travel any time, but will be locked into the school schedule in a few years when our kids are old enough to start school.
6) Can you make firm plans 12 or more mos. in advance?
Most years, yes.
7) Can you vacation for a full week at a time?
Yes.
8) What level of accommodations do you prefer on a scale of 1 to 5 stars?
3+
9) How much can you afford to spend upfront, without financing?
$10k
10) How much can you afford to spend every year for a maintenance fee that will come due right after Christmas, and increase each year?
$3k
11) Are you a detail oriented planner?
Yes
12) Do you understand that once you buy a timeshare, it may be very difficult to sell or give away, and you are responsible for all fees, until you do?
Yes.
Given that information, is a timeshare right for us at all? I'm leaning towards one of the point-style programs so we can visit different destinations every year.
