Lifetime probabilities are for a US resident dying in a relatively common event:

Heart Disease: 1 in 5
Cancer: 1 in 7
Stroke: 1 in 24
Motor Vehicle accident: 1 in 84
Air/space accident: 1 in 5134

I wish the data included helicopter flight seeing as a separate category.


My sister in law, who works in the insurance industry, still won't get on an airplane to visit Hawaii (or anyplace else).

Those odds seem kind of high to me. Something odd is going on there.

Maybe, like Rainman, she'll fly Qantas Airlines? Ask her.

Qantas is one of the safest airlines in the world with a record of zero fatalities in its many years of operation. However, one of its Boeing 747 was involved in an accident during a landing in Bangkok. Although there were no fatalities, the damage to the airplane was quite extensive. Instead of writing off the hull that would be cheaper, it appears that Qantas decided to repair the airplane to maintain a zero hull loss record!

Icarus: I noticed you are from upcountry Maui. Several years ago we were headed to the winery and there was the most incredible flock of butterflies we have ever seen. It must have covered 2 miles along the highway and they were so beautiful I just turned on the flashers and headlights and drove about 3 miles an hour.

Any chance you would know what they were?

I don't know what kind they are, but they are here seasonally, and lots of them spend time on the "farm" my house backs up to. They might be Monarchs. When it's in season, there are lots of them out there every day.

Aparently there's a butterfly ranch somewhere upcountry.

I found a page called butterflies of Hawaii, but there's only two native butterflies here according to another page I found.

Possibly, the one I see around my house is the Kamehameha butterfly. Not sure.

About accidents: You have the Mazda 3, right?
Our son's girlfriend had a nice 2006 blue one, similar to yours. Only 4 months old when she was rear-ended and pushed into the commuter lane and a BIG Lexus SUV took out the left side from frear-to-front.
Older car that hit her went up in flames, but no one really hurt. She received glass cuts when side windows blew out and of course the aches and pains that go along with something like this. Sure messed up the freeway.
Got new, same model, different color (Burgundy Wine, sort of) about 3 weeks ago.
Need parts? Somewhere around here, the blue one is probably in a recycle yard!

Yeah .. it's the wife's car. I'm driving the old 2000 Ford Explorer. Glad everybody was ok.
