At first I was very pleased to hear that Alaska Airlines now goes to Hawaii.

But shock took over when I compared their fares to every other carrier! What are they thinking?

Does anyone have comments or information on why Alaska Airlines flights to Hawaii are so high?

I tried to find an email address to give them some feedback but could not find one.

I don't know what dates you are looking at, but it looks like most of their cheaper seats are sold out through the end of the year (I haven't checked any dates in 2008). At one point I saw RT flights from SEA for $300 - $350 which seems perfectly reasonable to me. :)

Of the "non-discounter" type airlines, Alaska has pretty generally been the most profitable (or least unprofitable). Their route expansions are generally well-planned and considered.

If Alaska is charing higher fares, I'm quite sure they are doing so thinking that they will fill their planes with the fare structure they have put in place. Given their track record, I wouldn't want to bet against them.

Alaska offered a huge special when they first started offering flights to Hawaii a couple months ago. I'm sure all the cheap seats went fast! Hopefully it will level out soon. It's a little cheaper for me to fly to Mexico than Hawaii.

The main thing for we will be availability of reservations using FF miles. Though Alaska dropped the affiliation with Hawaiian (which never worked for me anyway), I believe they still of flights to Hawai'i via NW, Delta, American, and Continental.

If that availability continues, and there is accessibility via Alaska, I will be happy.

I just checked the dates 12/11>12/18, r/t, SEA>HNL, n/s, on Kayak.com and these were the results:

NW $316
HA $392
AS $500
CO $618

It looks like AS needs to get more competitive.

Alaska Airlines

Hey Phil the rates from LA weren't to bad last time I looked, but I looked using miles plus cash

I was fortunate enough to pick up one of their intro. fares - $121 one way to HI. I'm really not looking fwd. to this flight. I have trouble setting in a single aisle 737. FWI in the future I'd fly HAL just because of the bigger aircraft.

Now if they would fly to Hawaii out of one of the SF Bay Area airports...

And for me, being able to use my companion certificate is a perk that will keep me loyal to Alaska as it saves a bit more. As well, from my doodling around, a FF award ticket is 5K miles less for a coach ticket than when flying a partner airline. Every little bit helps.

Bev,
I love those Companion passes too. Only $50, plus taxes, for your sweetie to fly with you. We're using one for our January trip to Puerto Vallarta. My wife's ticket was less than $150. Ole!!

Phil
