Hello folks,
Newbe here. I read a few posts here and think I will like the exchange of information and suggestions. I hope this may help those who are trying to sell their timeshare. I have mine for sale (Branson) through an agency and this past week got a phone call from a company that said they have special buyers who want to buy all units at my location. They offered me a huge profit and said the buyers get tax breaks from buying them. They sent me a supposedly contract via email. The paper had nothing legal about it. They wanted $2000 upfront legal and closing fees and said that would be rebated later. Right !! After I told the man I would in no way give him my CC info over the phone...he said when I come to my senses to call him back. Maybe this will help someone out there. Thanks for all the posts ...they are really helpfull to me.

Welcome to TUG. If you'll be around awhile, you should join. It's the best $15 you'll ever spend.

As for your scammer, what is the name? People here are very interested in things of this sort. Telling who is doing this sort of stuff may send a red flag up for someone else. It certainly smacks of a fraud thing, so it's always good to know about.

Welcome to TUG!

For more info on how to successfully sell your timeshare, read the "how to sell" article located at the top of the list of topics for this Buying, Selling, Renting forum. That article also discusses the type of upfront-fee call that you received!

I dont remember his name but he worked for Showcase Resorts Inc. and they do have a web page www.showcaseresorts.com in Las Vegas. They really got my attention with a large offer but I asked for some sort of contract and he emailed me a simple contract with no legal signatures. Then he called me back and wanted my CC# for a $2000 marketing fee which supposedly would be reimbursed at closing.

I have a hunch that closing somehow never actually happens.

The professional closing agent at ShowCase Resorts is Helen Waite.

If you want to get your $2,000 back at closing, after paying ShowCase resorts $2,000 up front, you can go to Helen Waite.

Bullfrog,
I got the same call from a BOB KELLY at Showcase Resorts, and I didn't even advertise my timeshare. When I refused to give him a C.C. number, he asked for my bank routing number. He has called me 5 times telling me how eager the buyers are and are now offering me $18,600, but he has to have the $2000. for legal fees immediately.
I called the Nevada Consumer Affairs in Las Vegas, and Showcase Resorts is not even registered.
Note: Be suspicious about the Vegas BBB, since Showcase Resorts direct you to call them and even give you a name to ask for, confident that there have been only 21 complaints since their start on April 2003 and they will not get a
negative review.
The States Attorney of Nevada suggests caution as well.
Oh, I finally told him that my lawyer will hold the escrow on this, and suddenly
the deal fell through. What a suprise!!!

Hey, maybe, just maybe, if enough of us are educated in the techniques of the scammers, we could put them out of business?

Victor

Just tell the dweeb to send you a check for $16,600 and keep the rest and see what he says...

They're back

Called out of the blue and offered me 18 cents a point for a block of Fairfield points that I own and are not for sale. While she expressed some shock when I told her that I bought these for less than a penny a point and was therefore stunned at her offer, she soldiered on nonetheless.

And for only 2k up front (which will be added to my cashiers check at closing ;) )

Similar lines -
  • Check the USA and Las Vegas BBB - we're clean
  • We have been doing this for 30 years
  • And a new one - can't remember the name of their closing company and they don't use escrow because escrow is only for real estate......hmmm......

$.18 per point??? Thats even higher than Wyndham retail! What a crock. Thankfully you recognized the scam.

A nice thought, to be sure, but as Mr. Barnum once noted...
"There's a sucker born every minute". These parasites rely upon this.
