[2006] Eeeuuw! I Just Bought A Used Toothbrush!

I sometimes claim, in a semi-joking way, that the only things I buy new are groceries & toothbrushes & underwear.

All the other stuff I buy -- horns, timeshares, cars, sneakers, books, TVs, furniture, etc. -- is used. (Or, if not exactly used, then at least 2nd hand.)

However that may be, today my cover story officially changes -- because I just now bought an (eBay) used toothbrush.

But it's not as icky as it sounds, because it's a (used) Sonicare electric toothbrush. The fact that the recharger & the powered handle are used is pretty much mox nix. The actual Sonicare toothbrush heads I get new (from eBay or Price Club, etc.).

BTW, at a supper break in between the early & late presentations of a Christmas musical performances I was in last December (playing 3rd horn), the dinner table conversation briefly turned to toothbrushes. One of the trumpet players claimed that the toothbrush was invented in West Virginia.

"If it had been invented in any other state," he said, "they would have called it the teethbrush."

At that, 1 of the ladies at the table said, "Wait a minute -- I'm from West Virginia. But don't worry -- I've heard that joke before."

I hate to say it, but I wouldn't buy or use a used sonicare, even with a new brush head.

At least on mine, the spray (or whatever you want to call the stuff that gets pushed around by those rapidly rotating brush heads) gets all over the toothbrush handle, and everywhere else.

There are just certain things I wouldn't buy used.

I guess you can stick the handle in the dishwasher and use the sanitize cycle after cleaning it with bleach, but still ...

Mine likewise.

But for the price differential between a new discount Sonicare & my used eBay special, I can afford to do a major serious cleaning & sanitizing & degrossification -- & still have a little something left over for buying new brush heads plus some Crest, (generic) high-tech floss, & (generic) Listerine.

HOW DO YOU KNOW that it wasn't dropped in the seller's toilet? :eek: or that the seller didn't have a transmittable "disease"? :eek: There is one virus i'm thinking about which IS contained in saliva, to many people's amazement (not only blood). I hate to say it, but that was not a wise purchase :ignore: Yep, a foot in the mouth would be healthier. Talk about "cheap". It might be good for cleaning golf clubs or something, but not teeth. I hope you'll wise up. :doh: jme

The Crest Company has one of these battery powered toothbrushes that retail for about $5 a piece. The heads are about $5 for two so they get you there. Anyway, we've been using them for the last year and a half and they do a decent job of cleaning the tartar buildup. And if they really get bad we toss them out. One of our first toothbrushes casing cracked so we're going to toss that sucker out when it gets water damaged. Otherwise they're pretty nice.

As it turns out, I might not have to.

Today the eBay seller E-Mailed saying the thing doesn't work -- won't take a charge after sitting around unused for such a long time -- so he's wants to send back my PayPal remittance & forget the whole thing.

(Now, if I were going to offer a used Sonicare on eBay, I would make sure it works OK before starting the Internet auction. But that's just me.)

One thing I've learned for sure is this: Next time I decide to buy a used electronic toothbrush, no way will I go bragging about it on TUG. (Some information is better kept private, eh?)

Nnext time I buy a used timeshare, however, I'm sure I won't be able to stifle myself.

This Time I Bought A New (Electric) Toothbrush.

OK, I learned my lesson.

This afternoon I successfully snagged another eBay Sonicare -- brand new this time, still in the unopened original box -- for a lower price than my previous ill-fated attempt at snagging a [ -- used -- ] eBay Sonicare.

I sniped in the winning bid manually with about 15 seconds to go.

And why not? If eBay is good for cars & timeshares & horns, why not for electric toothbrushes too?

I put so much oddball stuff & offbeat personal trivia on TUG that the BBS is my blog. It's only a matter of time till the TUG Grand Pro takes me to the woodshed over that. (I try to behave myself, but I have been scolded once or twice in the past for inappropriate BBS contributions, adding no doubt to those server overloads we all deplore.)

Shucks, practically my whole life is already on TUG-BBS. That made it hard to come up with truths & lies for that BBS topic that hadn't already been hinted at or specifically referred to elsewhere on the BBS.

However that may be, I'm very much like those people Mark Twain had in mind when he said...

Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody. ​

Love your posts. Always so honest. Don't be put off by the nay-sayers- even those that disagreed with your decision to buy the used tooth brush were reading your posts because they are always interesting/entertaining.

Alan, I hate to break it to you, but the toothbrush wasn't invented in West Virginia. It was invented by the Chinese in 1498.
