We're driving ourselves nuts trying to decide where to spend our 20th anniversary (May 2010). I noticed there are several Marriotts in Hilton Head (we're planning to trade Aruba Surf Club lockoff), which are the nicest? We'd prefer to be on the beach, but close to restaurants and activities. What is there to do in Hilton Head, other than golf? Any info appreciated! :D

Hi Cathy,
Barony, Grande Ocean, and Surf Watch as they are the newest and on the beach. Next would be Monarch, then Harbor Club. Monarch is also on the beach. Harbor Club is not but it is at the light house which is a "hub" of activity every evening including shops, restaurants, fishing pier, water sports etc.

We go to HHI every summer and we do not golf much at all. We spend our time bike riding, kayaking, walking the beach, swimming, shopping, and evening boat cruises. Also, if you have any interest, you are only 40 minutes from Savannah, approximately 2 hrs from Charleston, and about an hour from Beaufort.

There are many many restaurants. You are bound to have a wonderful time!

and Congrats- 20 is a biggie!!

I would try for the Grand Ocean, first and foremost. If you can get that, I'm sure you'll be very pleased. Its the closest to the ocean, and to Sea Pines, where you can leisurely ride bicycles to many great restaurants and shops.

I have some pictures on my website that shows how nice GO and the surrounding area is. I have a page dedicated to the GO, but also look in my family photos for an album of HHI pictures.

Barony and Surfwatch are also very nice, but a slight bit further to the beach, although they are both beachfront resorts. However I don't think you can do the bicycle to Sea Pines, too far I believe, which for my family is one of the highlights of HHI.

It's also what you're looking to do on your vacation. I LOVE HHI but I also love the Marriott property in Myrtle Beach - Ocean Watch. It's in a very quiet, upscale area, the beach is gorgeous there, and Myrtle Beach has lots of fun shows to go to, cool shopping areas, and also great restaurants. There is also a full-service hotel right next door with restaurants and a full-service spa.

As for HH, I know many TUGgers prefer GO. I myself love Surfwatch. There is solitude there. I also happen to LIKE the boardwalk and looking out over the marshes to the ocean. The units are newer and the showers - let's just say that I never want to get out. There is also a great park right next door.

Barony is my second favorite - also on a pretty quiet stretch of beach (although not as quiet as SW), the lushness of the vegetation there, right next door to the Westin Hotel, and a full-service spa right on the premises.

Sea Pines is definitely the 'best' place to ride bikes, but we have also found some excellent bike-riding in the Port Royal area, which is where SW and Barony are located.

We will be in BB a week from tomorrow and cannot wait!! Never having been to HHI I am very excited. I have been checking II to see if any GO units have popped up but nothing so far. We are very excited about BB but GO's location and overall better reviews have slightly tipped the scales in their favor. That said we would not be unhappy at all going to BB.

Try a search on this board on which HHI resort is best. LOTS of great info!

We bike ride every summer while we are on HHI. We have biked to Sea pines from the Barony. It is a bit of a ride but we enjoy the outing. You can not bike into Sea Pines with out paying for a bike pass ($5). If you are at the Grande Ocean your stay includes biking in Sea Pines. None-the-less, you will enjoy HHI regardless of which of the resorts you are at. Have fun ... enjoy the 20th ... we still remember ours ... :p :)

Thanks all - I think we've definitely decided on HHI, and our first choice for trade will be the GO. Joe, your photos are beautiful, as is your family! I even peaked at the ones from Aruba, since we're Surf Club owners. :D

That is exactly why we own both! We will be spending the week of the 4th this year at Barony then spending a night at the Rennaissance in the Historic District at Charleston, follwed by a week at Ocean Watch. Can't wait!

Also love the units at Surf Watch especially the showers. My wife wants the tub like at Barony and Ocean Pointe, but I like the showers at Ocean Watch and Surf Watch.

We will also be at Barony for the July 4th week and then traveling to Ocean Watch for a long weekend. Have also stayed at the Rennaissance in Charleston and it is a beatiful hotel in a great central location.
I agree with you and "Luv2Vacation" that Barony Beach is a great property. We do love Surfwatch, and have stayed there the past two years for July 4, the showers are fantastic and the property is so peaceful and lovely. Also agree that, Ocean Watch is a gorgeous property in a very nice area on North Mytle Beach and the full service resort next door is really a plus.
Can't wait for July 4th week--perhaps we will see you there and at Ocean Watch.

Can't you bicycle into Sea Pines via the beach? I seem to remember doing this not to escape the $5 entry fee but because we were riding on the beach and it just happens. Has this changed?

No, it hasn't changed.

Just watch the high tide schedule when riding on the beach. It's riding against the wind that's tough not into it. We stayed in SP so we had no issues there but rode on the beach for the first time just shy of the Holiday Inn from Monarch. When biking on the main road the guard checks your bike pass.

Going back we decided ride then do the short cut on one of those teeny paths to the beach that are so many homes apart. I wanted to cry because I was so exhausted riding against the wind.
Another day I fell and am lucky I did not break my leg. There is a reason it says walk your bike don't ride on the beach path.

We rode to Coligny and then in and out of the streets on North Forest down by the beachfront houses. We rode bikes almost everyday. We rode to Salty Dog and went to the beach there and through the paths that are behind the houses next to the golf course. This time we did not see deer as I hoped.

PCgirl54,
Have you ever ridden your bike from Harbour Point to Barony Beach Club? We will be at HP during the summer and have day privileges at Barony. We would like to ride our bikes from Harbour Point so we can use the pools at Barony. Can we can ride on a path from one resort to the other?

Thanks,
Joyce

FlyerBobcat,

I know what you mean. We are looking forward to going to Hilton Head this summer. We will be at Harbour Point the week of June 27th and at Barony the first week in August. Enjoy your trip at GO!

No I haven't but there is a tunnel from HP to the Palmetto Dunes side to avoid Wm Hilton Pkwy. We used that to ride to the beach at Palmetto but never went as far as Barony. There are sidewalks that could take you there.

I did ride bikes from Monarch to Sticky Fingers up Pope Ave then cross over to the hwy near Redfish for SF takeout. I didn't like crossing the hwy to come back to SP circle,it's too busy.

PCgirl54,

Thanks! That’s good to know about the tunnel.

The tunnel is actually right between the Shelter Cove Mall and the Shelter Cove Harbour.

No need to ride on the sidewalks. After you go under Wm Hilton Pkwy, stay on the bike path on the other side. The path actually continues on that side, along the highway, for well past Main Street. However, you will make the (right) turn at Folly Field Road. There are bike paths there, too. A little ways down, the road kind of splits and you'll make a left. I believe it continues to be Folly Field on the left you're taking. Still bike paths. At the end of this road, the Barony will be on your right.

It's not a bad ride, but I would say that it's probably about 6 miles or so (one way). Also, be aware that the path along the highway is mostly in the sun, except in the very early morning. It can be a very hot ride.

luv2vacation,

Great information. Thanks. I will also save the directions and put it in my Hilton Head file.
