I have agreed to rent a T/S and the renter sent me a signed rental agreement. I also signed it & returned a copy to him. He sent me a PayPal request for the deposit, which I paid. I have e-mailed him twice in the past week asking for a confirmed reservation number and I have had no response. How long is a reasonable time to wait and what else should I be doing?

What does the contract state about when you were to receive the confirm?

If the contract doesn't state when, I wouldn't be too concerned until the date approaches- maybe 60 days out?

Did you pay 100% of the rental already? I rented a week in Apr 2010, and we agreed on 50% upfront and the balance 60 days before- and that's when I get the confirm of the reservation

No need to panic, especially if the rental is not starting for a while. Always get a phone number where the renter can be reached before sending any money.

How did you verify the validity of this rental?

The contract doesn't specify a confirmation date. The rental is for March 2010 and we paid 50% up front with the balance due at 60 days prior to rental date.

The last time we rented at this resort (from a different party) we received a Starwood confirmation number within a few days but we paid 100% up front.

The e-mail address and rental agreement say he is with "Westgate Sales Group" and phone number/address are included. The rental is actually a Starwood resort.

We didn't. How do we do that?

There are many ways:

1) Ask for a copy of the original reservation.
2) Ask for a copy of the owner's deed proving ownership
3) Have the owner set it up so you can call the resort and confirm that they have a reservation.
4) Have the owner have the resort send a confirmation directly to you in your name.

For lots of info. about renting, see the "How to Rent Your Timeshare," article at the top of the board.

If the rental is from a broker/agency and not direct from the ower, how would I verify the ownership and availability of the week? Should I expect the broker to provide me with similar information?

I am currently trying to rent an addiitonal week at my own resort and I received an offer, in response to my Rent Wish ad on TUG Marketplace, from an agency (I think the same one that gkuhrt is dealing with).

They gave me a unit number, and rental amount and a saturday checkin date - but I know the amount they are asking is way less than that unit would rent for, and that the check in day should be Friday. and I have spoken to the owner of that unit/week and she doesn't rent it out!

I have gone back to the agency with this info and asked for the correct unit number - so far no reponse, but it has only been a couple of days.

When rentals are done directly with an owners, it is all done via the "owner" part of the resort website and both renter and rentee get an email confirmation of the rental from the resort.
Not sure how it would work with an agency rental, but there is no way I am parting with any money until I have confirmation of the exact unit, and reassurance from somewhere that the unit/week are available and will still be availalbe to me when I check in!
