Which artist was associated with France's Moulin Rouge?

Paris's most famous cabaret, the Moulin Rouge, opened its doors on this date in 1889.

Named for one of the windmills in the Montmartre section of the city, near where the nightclub is located, the Moulin Rouge was the home of the French cancan.

The word "cancan" in French means "scandal," and the high-kicks and lifting and tossing of skirts did scandalize 19th-century audiences.

The nightclub was the venue for twice-weekly masked balls and tame monkeys and donkeys wandered in the area.

Artist Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec created numerous paintings of the cabaret and of the revelers who frequented the place.

Nowadays, the Moulin Rouge is a favorite tourist destination for visitors to Paris.

Quote:"I paint things as they are. I don't comment." — Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Unfortunately, the Moulin Rouge is reportedly a tourist trap nowadays. The reviews are so poor that they sapped all of my enthusiasm for visiting it while I was in Paris a few years back.

But I loved the movie.

Reading reviews of the movie is quite interesting. If you were to plot overall reactions on a scale of 1 to 10, it would not represent any kind of a typical bell-shaped curve. Most poeple either think the movie was incredible or hate it passionately. There seem to be few people occupying the middle ground.

I saw the Lido in Paris a couple of nights back and really enjoyed it ... expensive, but not really much more than you'd pay for a good seat and dinner at a top Las Vegas show. Dinner (excellent) was 195 euros incl a nice bottle of bubbles, started at 7:30 pm with 2 hour show at 9:30 to 11:30. It was a full house and we had great seats - perhaps 20 feet from the stage. When we left, people were all lined up down the Champs Elysees for the midnight show. The acrobat shows between the 4 sets were really outstanding. The girly part was OK too. :)

Last time we were here we went to the Moulin Rouge but I think the Lido was better (but no Can-can).

Went there once. Got seated next to a man that hated Americans.
A girl came out and took off her top................... I left.

Put me in the hate it passionately. It was one of the stupidest movies I have ever seen, didn't care for the music - total waste of time.
