Just curious, is it worth the extra hour or so to jog over to Jacksonville and drive down the coast to Singer Island instead of going down through Orlando? We will not be pressed for time and just wondered if it was more scenic?

I think you'll find it more than an hour or so longer but it is a nice drive, especially to see St. Augustine. A1A is not a highway...lots of traffic lights and low speed limits with traffic.

If you are taking 95, no it isn't worth it unless you plan to stop at St Augustine and /or Daytona. You will not be on the beach. We've never taken A1A but it would take a lot longer then an additional hour. If you take the turnpike/75 get off at Ft Pierce and take 95 from there. If you decide on 95, we find it is quicker to go thru Jacksonville then taking 295.

I love meandering down A1A and stopping and spending a night when I see a place that looks interesting. It is how i found my favorite beachfront area in Deerfield Beach. I would never have gone there if I wasn't just cruising.

If your not in a hurry, get off the beaten paths (interstates) and drive those back roads. There is alot more to see in Fl then what you see from the major hiways. Alot of these small towns have lots to see and do. Have fun.

St. Augustine is worth seeing.

St. Augustine is great, especially if you enjoy visiting a place with history. We spent a few days there after doing the Orlando parks. It was a welcome change.
I'm not sure if there are any timeshares; but for regular accomodations I highly recommend the Hampton Inn and Suites, St. Augustine-Vilano Beach. A short drive into St. Augustine and very close to the beach.

If you don't want to pay the tolls, 95 is a good option and it didn't take us much longer.

I love driving off the beaten path especially in the south. If you cant spend a day in St. Augustine then spend an hour or two just walking around the city. Coblestone streets, lots of history and they have a big huge fort smack dab in the middle of the town.

Just to clarify, US-1 is a straight shot between Jacksonville and The Keys. Yes, there are stop lights and possible traffic, but it allows you to truly see all the cities. A1A splits a few times, so you would need to "detour" a few times. So, if that's your plan, take US-1 and hit A1A in a few cities.

If you plan to stay on the interstates it wouldn't make sense to cut over to the coast to Jacksonville then down I95 and spend an extra hour of driving.

If you plan to get off I95 to explore some of the cities and to drive down the non-super highways then I would think it's worth the time.

When it is said that getting there is half the fun, the interstate system wasn't in place. I like to get off the interstates even if it's just to find a non-chain restaurant to have a meal in.

Thank you all. I was thinking taking 95 but time permitting strolling through Daytona just to say we have been there. Depends on how ambitious we are to get up and going.

If you do take this side trip, stop at the Daytona Flea Market if you are there on a Fri, Sat, or Sun. We always stop and pick up a bag of grapefruit or oranges and shop for other produce and check out some of the other stands. We buy a bag or two of "seconds" and pay less for them.

Most of the produce vendors and many others are gone by 4 PM.

If you're driving I-95... A worthwhile diversion is the Kennedy Space Center.
Even if you don't have time to do a tour or I-Max movie, just walking thru the Visitor
Center, and strolling about the rocket garden, is a nice diversion from the long-drive.

You may even see a few dolphins at play in the Indian River on the way over.
