How to give away an unsellable Timeshare
This is how I would give away an unsellable timeshare. This idea is for the person that pays the MF every year but never uses the unit.
First I'd find a Family member, friend, acquaintance or stranger that is not in the habit of taking vacations (if your ownership is not during a school break, you're goanna have to find folks without kids or maybe a group of singles). You then say guys/gals why not take a week on me? One catch – you’re under no obligation but, if you like it, I want you to consider buying it. If they don’t buy, try another crew the following year (if folks don’t buy after the first visit, sending them back is unlikely to change their minds). However if they are on the fence I would suggest you close the deal by offering to pay the first year’s MF. I say choose someone that is not in the habit of taking vacations because I was one of them. I never took vacations but, after the first vacation I became addicted. Be sure to choose a person or persons that you believe can afford the maintenance fees.

I sure would NOT dump something worthless on a family member or a friend.
If that happened they would no longer be a friend. If was a member of the family you have to live the rest of your life with that deed between you and them. |

In this economy, probably 50% or more timeshares have no resale value. That doesn't mean that they are "worthless." An inexpensive timeshare could be a great deal for a family who could use a regular vacation - especially if it has a low maintenance fee. I have 3 timeshares right now that have zero resale value, but I am sure getting a lot of use out of them! (Two of them were given to me - free, and a week exactly like the 3rd one sold on ebay last week for $1.)

And yet, over and over again, when someone who is hurting financially will ask TUG for help on what to do about their maintenance fees, we continue to tell them to post it on Craigs List, eBay, or donate it... when we all know full well that doing any of these is a waste of time on over half of them. It never seems to get mentioned that their unit is worthless. I'm just saying...

Yes, you did DeniseM and I thank you because I almost spent $1200 on a direct TS sale that I then saw listed (similar week) on ebay for $1. I bid and won the TS and am waiting to close. TUG is providing a great service to members.
