This year I purchased the Deluxe program that requires you to use the internet to prepare your return. Normally I download the program to my computer, but not this year. I found that the internet program lacked many of the prompts and program aids that I was use to with the downloaded program. Many of the ways to save money just weren't there. I called H&R to find out why I was having problems and they confided that the online version is far less detail oriented than the program you put on your computer. One of the biggest problems I had was that since you don't pay to use the online version until you are ready to finish, you can't look at the return. Example, the first action I took was to transfer last years information into this years. It didn't work, but I didn't know it until I was done and paid for it. When I asked H&R about that, thier answer was it doesn't transfer the information unless you pay extra for that option. Another problem, I use the standard deduction, but I wanted to select the option of getting an addition deduction by using state sales tax instead of Property taxes. That version does not allow you to choose. When I complained to H&R they agreed that the download version was much better for my use and were nice enough to provide me a free download since I had already paid for the internet version.
So my advise is spend a couple bucks more for the more detailed download version.

The same is true for TurboTax. The online product are cheaper for a reason. They work better for simple returns. The download product is far superior and it is what we continue to buy every year.

Since we always do two returns with our one purchase, it only costs a couple dollars more than two separate online versions.

I purchased H&R Block At Home Deluxe on Amazon for $25, no tax, free shipping. It includes 5 Federal EFile plus 1 State. The State EFile costs extra. It was formerly Kiplinger Taxcut, I've been using it for years.

I've found you can do as many as you want with the software, no need for extra copies. After the 5 Free EFiles it starts to charge you, but you can print and mail as many as you want.

Just curious - why have you chosen HR Block rather than TurboTax? I've been using TurboTax (previously Macintax) for at least 10-15 years, and never had a problem.

My answer is simply cost. I have used both Turbo and H&R and find them equal, so why pay morefor Turbo? I did make a mistake in signing up for the online version that uses and stores your return on thier data bases, but have learned a lesson doing that. If I had been aware that the online and download versions were not equal I would not have gone that route. I was just advising Tugger's that they are not equal.

A few years ago, a TUG member provided a great tip about receiving 3 years of a monthly Kiplinger newsletter for free--just needed to sign up on-line. The going price then was $39. a year. Many of us signed up.

About 6 months passed and nothing arrived. We began to wonder if it had been some kind of scam. Then suddenly the newsletters began arriving every month. As an added free bonus, subscribers, received a free down loadable version of Tax Cut each year. I'm used to it and actually paid for it last year.
