I'm thinking of buying a resale welk. i live in So Cal and would like to be able to stay in places within 1-3 hours drive. we have small kids that like swimming. if I owned welk, would I be able to book carlsbad seapointe in Il? i've never traded before so I don't know how it works. What type of fees would I have to pay? Also, if i buy welk resale, and it's the escondido location, I can only go there, otherwise, I would have to trade? For instance, could I book welk carmel?

When you make an exchange, it is different than just making a reservation, because there are many factors that come into play - trading is never guaranteed. I'm guessing that trading Welk for a resort on or near the beach is probably a trade-up, and you may not have enough trading power.

If Carlsbad is your primary goal, I would investigate buying there (resale.)

We are former owners of Welk- a fixed week in the Resort Villas and then points in the Platinum Points system. The other option in Escondido is the Villas on the Green (VOG) section of the resort. The overall resort is very nice and is very large, and includes the Mountain Villas, which can only be reserved through the points program.

If you buy in the Resort Villas you have a fixed week fixed unit for your use. The units are very large 2BR units. VOG provides more flexibility as your week floats and you can lock it off into a large 1BR and small 1BR if you don't need 2BR.

The resort has four pools as I recall and our kids loved swimming in them when they were younger. If you want to go to the beach, it's an easy 30-35 minute drive to Carlsbad or Oceanside.

I assume you would be wanting to vacation when the kids are out of school (summer), which is high demand for resorts on the coast. The Welk units trade OK, but I am not sure what it would pull on the coast in the summer. I don't think they have a resort in Carmel, or at least they didn't when we owned them earlier this year.

As suggested, if you want to spend a lot of time on the coast, I would recommend looking for something there. Good luck and let us know what you decide to do.

Best regards.

Mike

Is there a Welk Carmel Hotel? It isn't listed as one of their timeshares.
