hello all tug members. I am confused. My husband and i are seperating and i am giving him the timeshare and i called the resort and they told me what to do about signing the papers but i own a melia vacation club membership. What is the difference between a timeshare itself and a vacation club? thanks so much

If this is a timeshare outside the US - you don't have a deed - you have a membership.

With this type of ownership, the resort management handles the transfer.

With a conventional timeshare in the US, you have a deed, but outside the US the resorts are often right to use/vacation clubs.

If you are both on the loan, they are not going to let you out, because you still owe payments on it.

Are there loan payments, or is it just maintenance fees at this point?

Options:

Walk away and (both of you) take the credit hit...
Take a personal loan, pay it off, and give it away, paying a loan for nothing in return but at least getting out of maintenance fees.
Find a victim who will pay $7K for it or take over payments (unlikely) if Melia approves .
I can't think of any others.

Unfortunately, your personal circumstances don't make any difference to the resort at all.

The issue is the same - you want out of your timeshare, but you owe $7,000. They want your money, they don't want the membership back.

Really, the only way to find out what will happen is to default and see if they go after you.

You are very likely to get offers now from people who claim that they can get you out of your mortgage if you pay them a big fee. Be careful - this is always a scam.

Of course the other popular scam is phone calls from companies claiming they have buyers or renters lined up who want to pay you boatloads of money for your membership or TS. Once they get you all excited about the prospects, they tell you that they will need an upfront fee to cover closing costs, taxes, etc.

Again, a scam!
