My mother-in-law, age 99, and sister-in-law, age 65, both had to be admitted to nursing homes in the past two years, and neither are likely to ever return home. My SIL was on dialysis for 3 years and last year had a massive stroke. My dear husband visits both of them everyday.

We spent numerous hours cleaning out and surrendering their apartments, and then brought tons of bags of their belongings to our home to sort out. Much was donated to charities.

We now have their 1,000 Plus holiday greeting cards, unopened and in pristine condition, which they had purchased prior to becoming disabled. Neither Mom nor Sis are able to use them now. Of course we will help them send cards to there friends.

But can anyone suggest a charity or organization that could make good use of them. I brought a bag of them to a Salvation Army thrift store and the attendant reluctantly took them. When I came back a week later, I saw that they were removed from their envelopes and scattered all over the counter and on the floor.

Well at least we will be set for life from having to purchase greeting cards.

Get a local school or two involved, and have the classrooms fill them out and mail them to service members who are overseas. There is a generic address they can go to, (I'm sure Google would have something), and they'll be distributed to deserving folks who can't be home for the holidays. A bit closer to home, I've seen the same being done for Vets in VA Hospitals, and for wounded service members at Walter Reed Medical Center.

Something along those lines would be a wonderful way to use the cards, and bring a bit of warmth to the heart of a service member who is working for the rest of us.

How about seeing if the younger Girl Scouts want them for crafts. Or perhaps a sheltered workshop if there is one near you

School/Girl Scouts - how about the nursing home they are in?

Curious how they are kept in such great shape. I have a few myself and find that they turn yellow after a while. Same thing with Christmas cards. I buy them on sale after Christmas. Forget about them and when I do remember and want to use them - they turned yellow :(

Send anonymous cards to strangers to brighten up their day. BTW use gloves. With 1000 cards there's bound to be one person who has a PPO out against someone and will think they're being stalked.
