In looking at all the usual rental companies: Costco, Booking Buddy, Priceline and Hotwire. They all seem to be running in the $850.00 plus range for the 20 days that we will need a rental. This is for an intermediate size car. Is this a normal price for San Francisco rentals or should I wait and keep watching for prices to drop as its gets closer to our trip? We arrive there on May 3rd around 5 PM.

Thanks everyone for being so helpful.

Depending on what's going on at the time, prices can be that high (for example Oracle Open World week).

However, you're 4 months out so I'd continue checking. In general, I get the cheapest rates renting from OAK because there are fewer surcharges than at SFO (I think they charge you $20 just to use the AirTrain to get to the car rental area). That may not be an option for you, although if the rate is significantly cheaper, it may be worth it for you to hop on BART and rent there given that your trip is 20 days in length. (You might even be able to do a one-way OAK-SFO rental since they are often considered coterminals and you are charged your rental taxes based on the pickup location -- but I digress.)

Rates seem to fluctuate daily, so I'd check Costco and some of the other rental portal sites mentioned in other threads.

Good luck.

I needed car for Feb 20-24. Rates were CRAZY on all the sites but I found "special" on Thrifty $185 inclusive mid-size SUV
then Monday rec'd email from Thrifty advertising economy for $14.99 so now my cost is down to $88 inclusive

I would check Thrifty and keep on checking!
Good luck!
