The apps are free for iPad but if you want to do anything more than read documents you need an Office 365 subscription. The least expensive is the "Home Premium" which can be found at Amazon for $67 for a one year subscription. But, this is in my opinion a good deal since it includes the MS Office apps for up to five computers and five tablets.

You can find FREE apps for Android and/or iOS that will allow you to read and write Office documents (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc). There is NO reason to PAY for software these days, unless you like goose-stepping alongside Microsoft.

Can you recommend one or more that you think are the best? There are so many out there that it's hard to pick.

For Android, I've used Quickoffice (Google) successfully to edit spreadsheets.

You can install the Office_Mobile apk yourself for tablets that Google Play says are not compatible.

Here's one place you can download it from:
http://midmaneb.magix.net/public/467.html

If you need help doing this, do a Google search for Android sideloading.

OfficeSuite Pro 7 is an app will allow you to view/edit/create MS office documents. It's typically not a free app but if you keep your eyes open you can often find it discounted. Got it for free last year off a promotion Amazon was running.

For my laptops, my work offered two devices with the MS Office package for $11. My sister got the same offer through her school division, so check with your employer. As for my phone, I'm will never have the need to work on a spreadsheet on my phone while riding the train like in the TV commercial.
