Stewart must be pissed! Colbert is clearly the more talented and funny of the two! However, I wonder how his Fox News conservative stitch will translate to the Late Show? I hope he stays in his character because he is frekin hilarious with it!

I'll actually watch the Late Show now. Letterman never actually did it for me although I was part of the studio audience for one of his shows a few years back.

Interesting question - I wonder how his Colbert Report persona will work for that type of show. Of course, I never quite figured out who Letterman or Leno's audiences were demographically. I usually fall asleep before the 11 pm news starts. Maybe everyone tapes/TIVOs late night TV to enjoy over breakfast the next day :)

Answered in the article linked in the OP --

Colbert, who currently helms Comedy Central's "Colbert Report" as a faux conservative, will leave the character behind when he takes over "Late Show."

"I won't be doing the new show in character, so we'll all get to find out how much of him was me," Colbert said. "I'm looking forward to it."

WOW - is this the "Jimmy Fallon" effect?

Will Late Night move to LA?

PS I was part of the Jimmy Fallon audience for 2 shows just when he had completed his first year hosting. I was enraptured with his energy level, his persona with the audience & his guests and THE ROOTS band.

Jimmy in his suit & THE ROOTS in their dreadlocks ... Have to admit, "Best House band" ever.

I am going to write away for tickets -- have a HGVC stay coming up. :D

Stephan Colbert is one of the most quick-witted and brightest comedians/commentators around - he got this from years of doing Improv. I personally would like to see him stay on with the CR on Comedy Central (as I do not watch that much LateNite TV) - but I can understand his desire to grow in his career.

No way Jon Stewart is jealous or pissed - Jon would be the first to tell anyone (and has repeated) that Colbert is one of the most talented comedians/commentators around. Besides I do not think Jon would want the gig (IMO). He is just too uncomfortable with himself - something not seen in Carson, Letterman, O'Brien, Leno, Fallon, Kimmel, etc (and certainly not Colbert).

I worry about Colbert following a Legend (Letterman) - that is a hard thing to pull-off, but Colbert may be talented enough (time will tell).

I think I might start staying up late!!! The Colbert Report is one of my favorite shows, but gets replayed the next day on The comedy network during the afternoon. That's when I watch it.

His first book 'I Am American and So Can You' is hilarious!!! Time to order his other ones!!!

Good Move CBS.

Just ordered two of his books. Will be here before we leave for Hawaii!!!

Colbert has commented on the new gig in usual form, saying in a statement: "I'm thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."

perfect Colbert retort...

I think Stewart is happy for his protege. That might open up a spot for John Oliver. He was saddened by Stewart's return. The one who seems particularly pissed (ballistic?): Limbaugh.

What a shock. Seriously, I am so absolutely surprised by Rush's display of indignation that I don't think I'll be able to go to sleep tonight. I think I'll just stay up and fret all night about this.

:hysterical:I'm with you on this one. I never watch him and was not aware of what he had said. I did see one of the news shows report on Bill O'Reilly (I think that's his name) and he was none too complimentary, either. What's with these guys?

I was never a fan of Letterman. Just couldn't feel his brand of humor. I look forward to seeing Colbert as Colbert. My DS is already mourning the loss of the Colbert Report, though.

I don't get the Comedy Channel, so I don't watch Colbert. I've seen on him on other shows and think he's very funny.

I really like Fallon though, Colbert would have to be really great to get me to switch.

Don't Colbert and Fallon have a Ben & Jerry's ice cream rivalry? :D

Ace, you can find snippets of the Colbert Report on youtube or even entire episodes on the internet if you are so inclined. If you are not already aware, he plays a character on that show. He portrays a conservative news/talk show host. The results are hilarious except I wish he would forgo the vulgarity. He is funny without it and it just takes away from the comedy, IMO.

Don't know about that. They are definitely friends though. I've seen Colbert on Fallon's new show twice already. One was a short appearance opening night and the other was a regular interview.

Thanks for the youtube suggestions. I've seen his highlights a lot in the past. Just haven't taken the time to watch an entire show.

You can easily watch any of Colbert Report segments (or shows) on-line from multiple internet sources. Some of these segment are pure comic genius and likely to carry over to The Late Show as they are neutral politically (for those millions in the middle of the political spectrum).

Rush Limbaugh is a blowhard idiot whose time has thankfully come and gone (for most free-thinking people) - now if the media would pay less attention to what idiotic jibberish comes out of his mouth.

Bill O'Reilly (?) - as Colbert's character is based on an extreme form of Papa Bear (as Stephan refers to Bill) - surprisingly it appears that Bill didn't realize (for a while at least) that Stephan is actually mocking him (my Mom also thought that Colbert was actually serious - as many somehow think/thought the same until they find out from Fox News that this is not the case. amazingly...). So it appears that Bill cannot just take the high road (nor a joke...)

Did you see what Jon Stewart had to say last night? He truly admires Stephan, and for good reason. Colbert's tribute to Letterman (and himself of course) was also good - although a bit understated for his character.

Colbert and Stewart love to pick these guys apart. A good chunk of their material is making fun of the O'Reilly's and Limbaugh's of the media.

sad to see him leave CC

I would rather see him continue his current show. I'll miss him. He is a great interviewer, and it could be a great move for him.

Yea, I might not be too gracious either if people kept making fun of me but O'Reilly makes it way too easy. Like I said before, I don't watch Bill or Rush so I only see the snippets that Jon and Stephen air. To be fair, Jon and Stephen also call to task anyone of any political persuasion.

Be sure to watch the follow-up of the ice cream dream sequence. That did not come up automatically on my ipad. I had to click on it when the above link ended before the sequence began.
