Hi :)

Newbies trying to figure out all of the rules before making a resale purchase... Can anyone help us understand the RCI HGVC 1-in-4 rule?

Thanks!

It means that if you are exchanging through RCI, each account can only stay in a specific Hilton resort 1 in every 4 years. So for example, if you stay at HGVC at Seaworld in 2014, you could not book it with that rci account again until 2018. At this point it is resort specific, meaning that you would be free to book another Orlando HGVC resort with RCI until you stayed there and then you would have a new date until you could stay at the second resort again.

I also think that the 1 in 4 is only for inventory found on the weeks side of things, that is a full 7 day stay. On the points side of things there should NOT be any 1 in 4 year rules.

However since there is no longer a separate button for points vs weeks, I am not sure how you would tell. Obviously if less than 7 days it has to be points, but if exactly 7 days it likely is weeks, but it could be points (although less likely).

The RCI 1 in 4 Rule is not just for HGVC resorts. It is also for other resorts. One that I know of is the Galleon Resort in Key West. That is a hard resort to exchange into since it is the only RCI Resort in Old Town Key West.

I have a RCI Points account, which also includes a Weeks account. You can only book HGVC properties for week stays, nothing less than 7-nites is available. I assume the HGVC/RCI portal is the same way, I never tried it, yet.

I have booked Hilton for less than 7 days via the portal. I booked Hilton Club NYC for 5 days. West 57th was also available. I do not think you are stuck for 7 days, at least at the properties I have booked or looked at.

Disney does not have a 1 in 4 policy but good luck getting into Aulani. She should set up an ongoing search with RCI and keep her fingers crossed. Only some resorts have the 1 in 4 policy not everything in RCI.

And the 1 in 4 rule is only through RCI... if exchanging directly through HGVC for an HGVC property, we can stay at the same resort year-after-year (if available)?

Yes. Booking in the club has no 1 in 4 rule. You can buy in Orlando and only use your points to stay at the same resort in Hawaii for life if you want to.

Also worth noting...the 1 in 4 rule generally is waived if it's a property where you own. I know I've exchanged in via RCI to HGVC LVH (aka Karren) using another week I own outside of HGVC and have had no problem doing so in intervals less than 4 years.

I'm unsure if the timing was such whether I stayed a full week or less. I did exchange using RCI points.
