I don't know how to begin looking for insurance to cover an August cruise trip to the Baltic. Has any one here gotten this coverage?

Thanks
Anita

I've used Travelguard and Allianz. Coverages vary, so you need to shop around. Do you use a travel agent? I do and I tell her what type of coverage I want and she gives me quotes from a couple different places.

We usually buy Travelguard for 'big' cruises. It's pretty expensive, and we've never had a claim. I guess the peace of mind is worth it. Especially when we had FIL (age 90something+) with. After he passed, the necessity of an unexpected return was reduced. We got along with just an inexpensive annual evacuation and repatriation policy for several years. Still no claims, but as we age, the insurance seems to make more sense.

Try one of the sites like InsureMyTrip.com. We used Nationwide Cruise Insurance for our last cruise and will likely use them again. Their coverage is a little different, their pre-existing condition waiver is based on final payment instead of having to buy the insurance within x days of initial trip payment

Cruise Critic has a dedicated travel insurance forum. Though I have found it is mainly a big advertisement for the Trip Insurance Store.

The best insurance option might depend on the cruise line you are sailing with. We use Holland America and usually buy their own insurance plan, which is excellent. Plus you don't have to purchase it until the due date for your final payment, and you still get the pre-existing conditions waiver. They have two levels of coverage, the higher plan also including medical coverage, which is extremely important for anyone whose normal medical insurance does not cover them outside the U.S., such as Medicare.

If I'm right, insurance you buy from the cruise line only covers the cruise. Maybe it covers air if you buy the air from the cruise line.

Am I mistaken? I always buy it from Allianz as I almost never buy the cruise air package.

But if you're buying air separately, you probably need to buy insurance from someone else. I just bought coverage of $2900 for a month-long trip including a cruise, a flight, and some lodging from Allianz via InsureMyTrip, and it was $148... about 5%.

There are three or four main parts to "trip insurance": cancellation, interruption, evacuation, and medical coverage. You can buy all kinds of combinations of these. We have annual evacuation and emergency medical, so don't need these when covering cancellation, but sometimes it's easier and cheaper to cover them all than to find coverage just for the first two. Squaremouth.com is good for this kind of shopping, as they list the carrier, price, and exact coverage on the main quote page.

What annual and evacuation policy do you use?

Probably true, but we always use frequent flyer miles and the fee to get your miles back is its own type of de facto insurance. I am concerned about cancellation, interruption and medical coverage outside the U.S.

I am concerned about cancellation, interruption and medical coverage outside the U.S.

We called our Medicare supplement provider and found that outside the U.S. it will cover up to what Medicare pays as long as an itemized bill- in English- is provided them. Since medical care outside the U.S. costs significantly less than it does here, for most travel, we just have the evacuation and repatriation coverage referenced above. Cancellation or trip interruption we cover ourselves and take our chances.

For 'big' trips where medical care might be iffy, and/or big money is involved, like safari, or expeditionary type travel to remote places, we spring for traditional travel insurance- like travelguard or Allianz.

YMMV

Once owned these: FirstFairway@Walden X 2; Lawai Beach; ManhattanClub; PuebloBonitoRose; 4 South Africa--now timeshare-free
We had a good experience with Travel Insured International. I seem to remember that they had some connection with USAA. We had to cancel a cruise because of an unexpected surgery and we got a full refund of all our expenses including airfare.

I use https://www.squaremouth.com to find a carrier for my trips. I don't insure the trip cost since I primarily want medical and evac coverage and it's quite affordable. Compare the carriers carefully before deciding.
