I'm faced with this every year. My kid has a Thursday and Friday off in March and it would make a perfect long weekend for a quick family trip. Looking for suggestions....

The issue is we already take off for a week in February and April during her school vacations. These vacations typically use all my frequent flyer points - so ideally I'm looking for something within driving distance or a cheap flight (but I never can count on that since it is also spring break for local colleges)

The kicker....we live in New England. March is as off season as it gets.

In the past we have done:
Boston - 3 nights at Marriot Long Wharf - did childrens museum, duck tour and aquarium.

Newport - was St. Patricks day weekend. Did improve show, murder mystery show (family one), brick market place and St. Patricks day parade.

New Hampshire - that year it was warm early and the mountains had pretty much no more snow.

I have thought about Cape Cod...but I spent a long weekend there in the summer and was already done with it. I think we would be really bored there in March.

My choice would be Montreal. Even though it will still be cold and snowy, there are a ton of indoor sights and the city operates beautifully in the snow anyway.
Because of the language difference, it feels like you have taken a trip somewhere far away...

The only fun thing I know of going on in New England during march is that it's maple syrup season. You could do a tour through Vermont and hit some "Sugar on Snow" events, maybe pair that up with visiting some of the great craft breweries as well. Of course, all that would require a fondness of beer and maple syrup.

Vermont and western MA are fun. The Norman Rockwell museum in Lee MA, Cabot Creamery/Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream/Vermont Teddy Bear all in that area (if driving is not an issue).

We travel to Wyndham Bentley Brook in Western MA. We love it there. We go for Thanksgiving and for long weekends whenever possible. We will be there for a week in April during Spring Break.

Jiminy Peaks Ski resort is right next door.

Vacation Village is across and up the road. I think that it is a RCI resort.

Have fun

I would shoot for Vermont because of the popular maple sugaring season. Plus, it doesn't seem you have been there yet. Take in the Stowe/Waterbury/Burlington area.

Thanks all.....we did Smuggs a couple of summers ago, so did the tourist stuff in the area. We have actually been to most area's in New England. I just listed the ones we have done during this off season time period.

We have never headed out to Western MA - it has been on the bucket list of places to check out. Full of TSs also....so a few hours of a drive and a TS to trade into would work out fine.

Think that is what I will start to research!

Ok all ... looks like we may have a group of friends going which will help pass the time with the kids during this off-season time. That is the key component...kids. Very easy for adults to getaway and relax during the offseason. Hard to do with kids in tow!

I have searched RCI and II and have come up with either:

Inn Season Pollard Brook - Lincoln, NH.
Vacation Village in the Berkshires - Hancock, MA
Wyndham Long Warf - Newport, RI.

I'm leaning towards Lincoln as we know the area well and if the snow season is long this year, then we may still pull off some winter sports. I suppose Hancock we could do the same....but I'm thinking chances may be better in NH.

Newport....always great - but no chance of winter anything there in late March.

Anyone with thoughts on these?

LOVE Newport any time of year. Plenty of stuff open for the college kids. Short drives to lots of fun stuff.

If the family likes skiing you are all but guaranteed to be on the slopes in late March at Canon Mtn (which is about 20 minutes north of Lincoln). Lots of shopping in North Conway which is a half hour from Lincoln.

Been in western mass in March and candidly it sucked. Too quiet, lots of mud.

Just my 2 cents

I personally like Pollard Brook/Lincoln better than Hancock. Never been to Newport but I always think of it as a spring/summer/Fall destination. Lincoln had a great snow season last year that extended into April. Maybe you'll be lucky.;)

Last year we spent 3 weeks in New England, actually Maine and New Hampshire. New Hampshire had lots of things closed.

Ogunquit and Rockland in Maine. Went up to Arcadia NP and it was wonderful, no crowds. The weather was sweater weather for us, being from northern Utah. Saw lots of lighthouses, Portland, and the Rockland area is a gem. I would return there in a minute even in March.

If possible I would try for the other side of the Kancamagus Highway in NH. I have stayed on both the Lincoln side and the North Conway side. Lincoln side does not have as much to do.
We own week 13 in North Conway and have skied every year. Conditions that week are great at Bretton Woods and Wildcat. Not sure when your child has off in March, but you can pretty much always count on that March week. Wildcat might stay open the latest. Also if your vacation days are after week 13 Sunday River in Maine is only a 45 minute drive from North Conway. They would probably be open through March.
