I got Chicken Pox 50 years ago and haven gotten shingles.

Then you have the shingles virus inside you, just waiting for something to trigger it. People like you (and most of us 'of a certain age') had those childhood diseases and are vulnerable. We are the target group for this vaccine.

You don't develop immunity, it's just the opposite.

I'm 80+. My family didn't keep records, so I'm not sure whether I contracted chickenpox as a child. But I have never had a vaccine & I haven't developed shingles (yet).

On another topic - I had a "flu" shot about fifty years ago. Immediately after, I got as sick as I have ever been (in bed & in a near coma for about ten days). Because of that episode, I have shied away from ever again getting another flu shot. It is also curious that I have not contracted the flu bug in the intervening time (Is it because of that one vaccination or am I just lucky, immune, or ???)

I hear this kind of thing all the time which is why I have never gotten the shot.

Got my flu shot today. So even if I don't have symptoms, I won't be "that guy" who passes the virus to others (see post #33).

Both of us got the shingles shot. Husband got the shingles anyway. He'd been in the hospital, came home, and the shingles appeared 4 days after he got home. 4 days after that our adult son got the chicken pox. Whew!

DW had shingles at 56. We both got the shot as soon as insurance would cover most of it. Because she experienced it she was able to get the shot once it was cleared up for a period of time. I got mine at 60. Not quite a year yet but neither of us have had a problem and I hope it remains that way. My father suffered from a bout and it was obviously not pleasant. We both had chicken pox as children BTW.

Last year, during our trip to Thailand, our 30 years old son got shingles and I our vacation delayed quite a bit for him to rest and to recover

I decide to get a flu shot and shingles shot yesterday. Hopefully, it will protect me from this painful shingle symptom.

If you got sick "immediately" after getting a flu shot, the virus was already in your system before you received the shot. Today's flu shots contain dead virus and you cannot get the flu from the shot.

I copied this from the CDC site:
What are the risks from getting a flu shot?

You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. The risk of a flu shot causing serious harm or death is extremely small. However, a vaccine, like any medicine, may rarely cause serious problems, such as severe allergic reactions. Almost all people who get influenza vaccine have no serious problems from it.

I have never gotten chicken pox and about 10 years ago I went ahead and got the chicken pox vaccine. Does anyone know if I should get the shingles vaccine?

Good question for your doc or health department. I would say no, because in order for you to get shingles, you need to have the zostavirus from a bout of chicken pox in your body waiting to be triggered into shingles. That said, I am no medical expert. Report back what you find out. In my generation, you weren't considered out of childhood until you'd had measles, mumps and chicken pox. It was a right of passage.

My mother on many occasions tried to get me to catch chicken pox from other children in school by rubbing my hands and arms against other children with chicken pox but I never caught it. 10 years ago, my PCP went ahead and tested me for antibodies and confirmed that I had never caught chicken pox. I will ask my PCP about the shingles vaccine...

You can't get shingles if you never had chicken pox, so you don't need to be vaccinated against shingles.
