Benefits of upgrade to Gold membership

Hello Through the use of Hilton American Express in year 2010 we have rec'd a note from Hilton stating we have been upgraded Gold status (we were Silver status) Looking at the benefits for Gold members, it appears to most benefits (early check in or late check out or use of Gym etc all) are incremental the real benefit is FREE BREAKFAST. Is this true or there are other benefits I am not seeing?

You are correct, sir.
A free omlet-waffle station and a hot buffet that typically would run $10-15 per person otherwise is a nice perk, especially for longer stays. If you're paying for your stay, you'll also earn a greater number of HH points.

You get free Internet in Hilton family hotels that charge for it, a savings of at least $10/day. And often you'll get nice upgrades.

It depends on the Hotel and your preferences selected in your Hilton Honors online profile. For instance, breakfast at HGI is free if you select that in your preferences, otherwise you will get 750 bonus points while at a Hilton or Doubletree it's free or you can get 1,000 points. You can also select free available room upgrades over bonus points, which can be nice if they put you in a suite or closer to the executive floor lounge, where breakfast is often served.

For Hampton, select the bonus points. All the rooms have water and a complimentary snack in my experience, so selecting it instead of points doesn't get you anything different.

To select, log into your HHonors account, go to "My Profile in the left navigation and select "VIP Hotel Benefits" and select the hotels to select/change the benefit preference.

All brands have free internet for Gold and up. Gold gets a 25% point bonus for points earned on stays.

How does one get to Diamond level?

I had been at the Diamond level for about 4 years and have been at the Gold level for the past 2 1/2 years. The nice upgrades go to Diamonds ahead of the Golds but we usually get the upgrade as a Gold HHonors member. The points accumulate very fast at the Diamond level, but you have to do a great deal of traveling and spending to be at the Diamond level.
