I have an older HP laptop that died on me. I put some extra ram in it when I got it. I now have a newer HP laptop, can I use the ram from the older HP laptop in the newer laptop? How do I find out if they are compatible? Would like to just try it, but worried it might mess up the new one. Thanks.

Ram tends to be "backward compatible." Since it's a laptop, the socket is very specific, but may fit your older Ram. You can try it, and the worst that will happen (presuming it fits) is it'll run at a slower speed than your new laptop would like. If it rejects it, take the Ram out, and reboot. No harm done.

Even better: You can go to a website like www.crucial.com and enter the specs on your laptop. It'll tell you what you need to use, and whether what you have is compatible.

Good luck,
Dave

If the laptops are more than a year or two apart it is likely a different style of RAM. Rare that it will transfer.
