We're here at Branson, MO for their annual Veterans' Week celebration. Most of the shows are Christmas-oriented, which is a bit too early for me. But everyone here is very respectful of veterans, it is what the whole week is about.

Take a moment to pray for the 48 members of the 173rd Airborne that lost their lives on the 8th of November, 1965. With the hell all around.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

For me, Memorial Day is the solemn day of memory and tribute to the solders and sailors who lost their lives in the service of our country. Veterans day is a hats and horn day for those of us who did not make the supreme sacrifice , if you are so inclined, drink up lads, we earned it! Mekong Delta yacht club 67-68

I am a veteran, but I would like to THANK everyone who has supported the military while we are in harms way. Thank you and Semper Fi.

Thanks for posting this. I can't read it without a big lump choking off my throat and my eyes leaking.

Definition of a Veteran

The best definition of a Veteran I've ever heard is this one:

A veteran is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America," for an amount of "up to and including my life."

This link provides the history of the poem.

This poem was written by a Canadian, John McCrae in WWI. In Canada (and somewhat in the UK and other commonwealth countries) there is a strong tradition of wearing a poppy at this time of year.

Just watch a hockey game right now and all the announcers wear poppies. Well actually a lot of Canadians wear poppies. I even saw the stupid Toronto mayor with a poppy on this week.

I'm a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. We stand on street corners, go to public events, even go door-to-door handing out poppies by the bazillions. Some give an offering that supports VFW, some don't.

It's a very moving poem, and Canadians are rightly proud of it's provenance and the part Canadians played in the 'Great War to End All Wars.'

Yesterday, before I even read this thread, I made a donation for a poppy while shopping. In my area it is the Jewish Foreign War Veterans who sell them. Many of them live in my community.

I may not be wealthy but I sincerely feel like I am so lucky to have one of the best jobs anyone could wish for in working at a VA hospital taking care of veterans. I am a vet too and it feels truly like taking care of family. I would not want to do anything else and feel so blessed. Had it not have been for the Army and the GI Bill I never would have gone to college or obtained a graduate degree. It has been a long rewarding path to get here.
