Hi all! I am once again reaching out to TUGGERS as I need some good info. I have friends who will be traveling to Cancun next month. They are not time sharing but rather staying at JW. They are family with 3 children, the oldest having SEVERE peanut and good allergies. They want to do some kid friendly tours but are fearful of those that include food due to cross- contamination issues. I am sure someone out there has encountered similar issues and would appreciate your advice,

2 of my group tours in Cancun included food, buffet style - Chichen Itza and Xcaret. There was a good spread of food at both locations. When we went on a private tour to Tulum and Playa del Carmen last year, we sought out restaurants on our own. Your friends should have dealt with this for a long time, as to how to avoid eating food with unknown ingredients prepared by others. But since we are talking about life and death, just pack something for the oldest kid.

I think it was last year that made news where a family lost their daughter at a summer camp here in California when she took rice crispy that had nuts in them.

Peanuts

Quite a few Mexican mole sauces contain peanuts, they are a staple in restaurants. There is a chance of cross contamination. It will be difficult to find a tour that includes lunch in which you can avoid the problem. You may have to pack a lunch on tour day.

I know that at Xplor, where food is included there are a lot of foods that contain nuts. My grandson has severe nut allergies and if we were to bring him to Cancun, I would stick to restaurants who could thoroughly understand what we were dealing with. The concierges on the Club 91 level of the JW are fantastic. I am sure they could advise your friend and help them book appropriate and "food" safe tours.

We have an egg and nut allergy 5yo.
I find Mexico easier than most countries for travel with allergies. If they like mexican food.
Burritos Tacos quesadillas guac salsa etc are all easy and flour tortilla have no egg or nut.

Buffet with self service is a ninightmare anywhere in the world.

As a family I would not bother with the tour and just rent a car and do it al a carte.

We did a day trip yo playa del Carmen yesterday and rented an intermediate from avid with liability (cdw on amex) for $60. Upgraded to a jeep patriot.

With kids would do this for tulum xcaret chichen itza etc as point to point no multiple hotel pick up. More space to carry kid junk and choose your own dining schedule.
