We are thinking of changing our StarOptions to StarPoints for 2010. We currently own 2 Bedroom at Westin Mission Hills every other year.

We used our unit in 2008, don't have use of it in 2009 so I believe every four years we can turn unit in for our Starpoints.

I looked in the Starwood FAQ and could not find the timeframe I can make this transfer. Can a Tugger help me please

Am I eligible? When is the soonest I can turn unit in for Starpoints? Thank you in advance :)

I don't have an answer about the EOY staroption-starpoint conversion.

But have you considered depositing into II?

Hi Cathy - Frankly, I would never convert my TS to Starpoints. It's just not a good value. Instead I'd rent or deposit w/II.

Also, note that you are not converting your Staroptions to points, you are converting your week directly to points.

Here is the info. from the FAQ that you are looking for:

3) What are Starpoints?
Starpoints are Starwood hotel points & they can be used for hotel stays, airfare, and other purchases from the Starwood Preferred Guests Program. Every-other-year, an owner can convert their timeshare unit into Starpoints before March 31st. Starpoints do not transfer with a resale. (A Starpoint chart is posted in the Owner Resources sticky.)

MY ERROR CORRECTED - You can convert to Starpoints between October 1 (prior to the Use Year being converted) and March 31 (of the actual Use Year being converted)

Before you do, look carefully at the number of Starpoints you will get:

Westin Mission Hills - 2 bedroom lock-off
Platinum - 72,000, Gold - 48,000, Silver - 23,500

You can only convert during your use year, so for 2010, you can convert between Jan. 1 and March 31, 2010.
Actually, I recall you can convert as early as October 1 in the year before your use year -- so in this case, your 2010 usage could be converted as early as October 1, 2009.

Thank you Brad! You are right and I stand corrected...

From mystarcentral.com:

Q: When do I need to take action to convert my week to Starpoints?

A: You may convert your ownership week to Starpoints between the dates of October 1 (prior to the Use Year being converted) and March 31 (of the actual Use Year being converted) and receive your Starpoints within approximately 72 hours of the transaction.
Please Note: You may convert your week earlier than October 1 (prior to the Use year being converted), however, your Starpoints will not be issued before October 1 (prior to the Use Year being converted).

For example, Mr. Jones wishes to convert his week to its equivalent value of Starpoints for the 2009 Use Year. He can make that request between the dates of October 1, 2008, and March 31, 2009. Mr. Jones will receive his Starpoints within approximately 72 hours of paying the $99 conversion fee and prepaying his maintenance fees, taxes and club dues for the 2009 Use Year. As soon as his Starpoints are credited to his account, he may call Owner Services or Starwood Preferred Guest at 1-888-625-4990 to make travel plans using his Starpoints.

When you convert your week to Starpoints, you are required to pre-pay your maintenance fees, taxes and Starwood Vacation Network membership fees for the use year you are converting. You must also be current in your financial obligations.

Please Note: To effectively manage the inventory of your Home Resort, and to ensure that there is sufficient space for Starwood Vacation Network (SVN) members, allotments for Starpoints conversion are set according to season and villa type at each resort. If the total allotment number has been reached, or if it is determined that SVN does not have the ability to rent the week to recover the costs associated with the conversion, a request may be denied.

Thanks Denise! I know it isn't a 'good value' but we have six other timeshares and three of those can be split, spent as credits for other timeshare locations -- more than we are finding time to use. We get the most benefit of using those Starpoints for airfare to Maui, Hawaii for two. :)

This is the best example of when to consider the conversion to SPG Points as a "viable" option. The only time you will want to convert to SPG Points is when you simply have too many other weeks to "burn".
