I read frequently about elite nights, carryovers, etc. But, I don't really know what use they have. I feel silly about it, but haven't seen anything in the Marriott Rewards website that explains them. Help?

Elite nights allow you to progress through the membership levels (10 nights = silver, 50 = gold, 75 = platimum). Each level brings a few extra perks such as bonus reward points, lounge access/breakfast, free wifi, room upgrades etc. The FAQs on the Marriott rewards website gives the detail.

Thanks. I should have guessed. They're not really nights, just a counting system.

I can add a little bit of history here. The main use is to allow folks to continue with their elite status. At the same time, this has also created a new problem for Marriott with PLT and PLT Premier Customers.

The PLT & PLT Premiers are now defecting to other loyalty programs in an effort to gain elite status on multiple programs at the same time.

You see when a PLT customer gets 350 rollover nights there really is no incentive for that person any more on January 1st of each year to continue with Marriott. Hey why not go over to HH or SPG and get matching elite status?

The only incentive left is Lifetime status but with the watered down benefits year after year the premium business customers are definitely shopping around for better programs and benefits.

I understand Marriott will formally announce the Lifetime status on March 2013 for the first time ever. All of us lifetime PLT have known since we got letters in the mail explaining it to us when we reached the threshold but it really has never been published by Marriott in their MR program.
