Hawaii So Cheap

I have been checking e-bay lately and notice that many timeshares in Hawaii are going unsold and even no interest at one dollar. Is it just the economy or do you think something else might be at play here. During peak times (winter) rent on most places in Hawaii would at least be $1000 per week and many of these timeshares have MF of less than that so it can't be that cheap rentals come into play.
Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts.

Thanks

I'm sure the economy has a lot to do with it. Just remember than even though the timeshare may be cheap the maintenance fees won't be. ;)

I think it's likely a combination of maintenance fees and airfare costs. I have purchased several Hawaii timeshares, all on eBay, and each for no more than a few hundred dollars. But it still factors in that by the time I add maintenance fees into things, plus the required airfare to get there, the ongoing costs become higher than what may be purchased on the mainland.

The offshoot benefit, though, is if you know what you're buying, and are prepared to handle those ongoing expenses to use the place, you can score some really great deals. I have an EOY oceanfront timeshare on Kauai that I really like, and I can stay there for less than $150 a night, plus airfare. That's a good deal. (And by combining that airfare with two timeshare weeks in Hawaii at a time, the costs per night go down.)

The one thing I wouldn't recommend is buying in Hawaii with the idea of renting it out or flipping it to make a buck. Chances are good you'll lose your money. Buy to use, and enjoy the relative bargain.

It's not just Hawaii. There are over 200 TS's for sale on ebay for $0 - $100.

The only TSs that seem to sell on ebay are Marriotts and red summer weeks, generally speaking.

Like many posters have said, many are going without bids, even at $1 all inclusive. I wonder if the next step is a cash incentive if you buy.

These are indeed interesting times...

There have already been a few free timeshares offered on TUG for which the owner offered a cash incentive to anyone who would take it, on the Bargain Board, which is a sub-forum of this forum.

My last two purchases where just pay closing costs and one had the first years use free.

Great time to acquire timeshares if you can afford the costs/risks of owning.

Were your purchases top months in top places?

Not all Hawaii TS's are created equal. In the current market, a non-beachfront unit is not as appealing. Also, some of the ones with lower MFs are not taking care of them. We own at Sands of Kahana and did a lot of research first. There were lots of other TS's near us that are not as nice. Even our place is not up to the Westin/Marriott/Sheraton level, so there is quite a difference.

I would totally pick up another Hawaii TS that was Oceanfront and had an MF of less than $1000. I have not seen anything that great, but will keep looking.
