cum-by-uga? (SP?)

This seems to me to be a little "ditty" that is sung after other words, ending a sentence in a song.

Someone made reference to it lately to me when expressing unpleasant remarks by a family member. Just conversation, no singing.

Any help out there?

Kumbaya is an infamous peace song from the Hippie Days. Today, you hear it used as sarcasm in response to someone's over-the-top idealism - or the exact opposite.

In your case, I'm guessing that they were saying that the family won't be "singing Kumbaya."

So if you say: "We are going over to Sis's house to discuss the will, and then we will probably sit around the campfire and sing Kumbaya."

It means: "We are going to go over to Sis's house to discuss the will, and it's going to get ugly."

Its unfortunate that this old black spiritual that was "discovered" in the 1930's has been all but forgotten, while its use as a term of derision lives on. It's origins date back to the creole former slaves. The refrain translates, "Come by here, my Lord."

It was popularized by folk singers in the 1960's -- Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, and such (hardly hippies, themselves). Sadly, nowadays, it's used as shorthand for those who would cover up serious disagreements with insincere harmony.

From a reference in Wikipedia --
After a farewell dinner at the White House for outgoing UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the US Ambassador Bolton joked that "nobody sang 'Kumbaya.'" When told of this, Annan laughed and asked: "Does he know how to sing it?"

Many thanks. Every once in awhile this seems to buzz through my head for part of a day. I'm pleasantly content and I just wanted to try and gather some more info. on it.
