I would think for the younger crowd it might work.

We don't even stay with family when we go out of town - we simply MUST have a private place to retreat to at the end of the day and I really hate sharing a bathroom, so this sounds like torture to me.

DH and I heard the teaser on the news last night and thought for sure the story would be about timesharing. Turns out it really is a low budget way to travel! You can sleep on a couch in home in exchange for work (such as cooking, yard work, etc!)

Uh, no thanks :) I'm sure it would work for some, though. Many of us have been poor college students (or just poor) at one time or other.

We have friends who have for years belonged to a similar group that offers free lodging to member families who are traveling. We've met some of their guests and they've been delightful. They'll just get a phone call saying "such and such a family will be traveling through your area on such and such a date and need x-number of beds or sleeping surfaces. Can you accommodate them?" They usually end up putting all the kids (from both families) on the floor and couches. It's generally only for one or two nights and they aren't expected to provide all the meals, but breakfast is always nice.
