I (son) have an upcoming exchange into the Westin. The exchange is in my parents name (timeshare owners).

If I present the exchange confirmation, and a credit card with his name, will that satisfy their checkin requirement? Or, will they look for a picture ID? I'm trying to avoid having to pay for a guest certificate if I don't need it. Thanks.

I have given my week at various Westin and Marriott to my parents, siblings and friends and all I did was call the resort and add their name to the reservation. Never was required to purchase a guest certificate.

Great suggestion. I'm also going to the Hono Koa on Maui. I'll ask my father to call and see what they say. Hopefully success x 2. Thanks.

Jeff: I have walked around the Kona Koa but never stayed there over say the Westin or Marriott Clubs. Love to read even a brief note on your impressions.

The Westin asks for a picture ID at check-in, so it would be a good idea to have your father call and see if they will let him add your name.

I've stayed there twice. It's not resort-caliber, like Marriott's or Westin's, but it's a clean, solid place. By that I mean you look at it, and nothing really sticks out as being a problem, bad, worn ,etc. I was last there in 2009, I think they had redone the room then, new kitchen - not big, but perfectly adequate. It could be tight if you had 6 adults there. But 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, LR, DR -great place to stay.

Here are the numbers for the front desk and FAX - I'd call, and then follow up with a Fax stating who you talked to blah, blah, blah - I wouldn't contact them until 10 days or so before check-in, because they don't get the II reservations very far in advance.

Phone 808 827 8700 - Fax 808 827 8701

Thanks:
- request checkin at ID - yeah, definitely need to call now
- call, then followup with Fax - great idea.

My stay at the Westin starts in a week; Hono Koa, two weeks. So probably within the window if my father calls next week.

Just a post-visit followup: no problems checking in (and I do think they requested my ID).

Got a little tricky when booking activities:
- sometimes it came up in my parents names
- sometimes they put it in my name
- sometimes it was both

But all in all minor. Last night I found another studio for next October, whuich I quickly booked. Should be another great vacation!
