I've been watching AA flights from LAX-OGG and SFO-OGG for a while for several dates. They've been unavailable for a long time and the LAX flights became available today. If you've been waiting to book award travel you might want to take another look now.

I used BA Avios (since it's just 12,500 Avios each way) for these but they are also be available from AA. Before today AA was only showing a connecting award flight to SFO and then on HA to OGG (which would make a 9hr flight), and today all three LAX-OGG nonstops are available.

Of course, FWIW and YMMV. Good luck!

As an aside, why OGG?

In later years, [Jim] Hogg helped to test a newly installed navigation station on Maui. In return, the FAA offered to name the station after him. The name could only contain three letters, the FAA said; did Hogg want it to be HOG or OGG? Jim, of course, chose the latter. The OGG initials eventually came to signify Maui’s airport, and to this day, perplexed Maui-bound travelers wonder where in the world OGG is and why their bags are going there.

Love me those Avios. Just used them from JFK to CUN for even less points each way I think. Hard to remember. Booked months ago.

Yes, though it's not always the best option. I was going to use them for a short hop in Europe in a few months but then checked BA's cash price and just laughed...$32 vs 4000 Avios (plus a few $).

Avios redemption rates are based on distance, as you know, so I suspect JFK-CUN is 7,000 Avios or so.

Your post inspired me as I have some Avios to spare. When I attempted to search for a flight I got an error "BA does not have traffic rights to operate directly between these two cities" -- any idea why?

Hi I figured this out the city pairing was LAX 20 GG but I was not signed into the executive club. Once I signed in it said oh you can redeem award travel and use Avios. Then it gave me the American airlines flights so that worked out perfectly thank you so much for the idea because I didn't have quite enough mileage on either airline to book round-trip but this way I booked one way on American and one way through BA. These timeshare vacations have been burning up my frequent flyer miles

Perfect! I've been quite happy with my BA credit card as a means to fly to Hawaii for "free" as its usually an expensive flight (and really only requires $10,000 in charges for a one way flight since it earns 1.25 points per $, which works out to 2-3% and sometimes more).

I received a letter from Chase informing me that at the end of April, which coincides with BA's new Avios changes, the Chase credit card will now earn three (3) points for every $ spent on BA, and only one (1) point for all other charges. This is a reduction from 1.25 to just 1 point, and effectively reduces value in this program to me. I'm not yet sure I'll continue to use the card to go elsewhere, though at $25,000 spend for roundtrip AA coach seat to Hawaii, I'm still ahead of most other programs.
