We're considering London and the UK countryside for next August. It fits our family schedule best, but I've been advised it's the worst time to go because Europe is on holiday and everything is crowded.

Anyone with experience?

Thanks.

From Frommer's London: "Rates generally increase between March 14 and June 5, then hit their peak in high travel seasons between June 6 and September 30... July and August are also when most Britons take their holidays, so besides higher prices, you'll have to deal with crowds and limited availability of accommodations."

We went there this year over the last week in May and had a great time.

We spent a week in London last August and had a great time. The Summer season is when the crowds are at their peak but it is not a big deal.

London being one of the major cities in the world is less affected by the Euro Holiday Season and just about everything is open and available. The Continent is s different story with lots of things closed or operating on reduced schedules as well as many Euro Tourists at resort areas.

As far as the Countryside is concerned, a lot of Brits flock to the South of Spain instead of their own sights. ;)

I would definitely go to London in August and not have a worry. You could make it your "home place" and take day trips to various locations like Cambridge, Bath, Oxford, etc. for a change of pace.

Cheers

I travelled with my DH, a teacher who could only go on holidays in July and August for 20 years. Yes crowded, yes holidays for the locals, BUT, IMO,

Anytime in UK/Europe is better than no time at all.Now that he is retired my preference is May, but you'll find July/August very doable. Don't let that stop you!

Just returned from London this last August. Spent a week at the Allen House and had a wonderful time. Yes, there are crowds but I expect that's the way it is. Didn't stop us or slow us down, we were on the go from early morning until late at night. I don't remember waiting for anything except the underground. Prepare to arrive early if going to Buckingham Palace to see the Changing of the Guard. Have a great time!

Classic Cruisers trades through II. I don't see anything right now for next August. However, it might beat the crowds.

FWIW, we are thinking of cruising the Thames next May/June.

We vacationed in the UK in August several years ago. It seemed fine to us, busy but never a problem doing things. We did Bath, London, Edinborough and back to London. One reason we liked August was because we were able to go to The Tattoo at Edinborough Castle - an amazing show of bands, pipers, etc.
