A few weeks ago I asked if anyone had to file a claim with Vacation Guard that is advertised on the HGVC site. I recently purchased the $49 coverage for my upcoming vacation and I emailed them to ask a few questions, so I thought I would post the answers provided by vacation guard. Hopefully, I will not have to use their claims department.

Most of my concerns were how much coverage I was actually receiving as I was not paying out of pocket for the timeshare, or airfare since I was using frequent flyer miles.

Here is their response:

Ø* With an average Delay claim of $ 500, if you use our plan just once in 10 years of owner travel, the plan will have paid for itself.
Ø* If you lose your annual dues via a cancellation, the value proposition is even higher.
Ø* You will see we also pay for outside airfare in covered cancellations, up to $ 5,000, if you are not using FF points.
Ø* We do in fact cover Frequent flier re-deposit fees – covered up to $500 on covered cancellations.*
Ø* Collision Damage waiver is included… at $ 15 a day per car rental company, that’s a savings on any trip.
Ø* Aside from the emergency medical benefits, and covering trip exchanges globally, the peace of mind that comes with our plan proves valuable.
Ø* Most of these benefits are found on pages 3 -5 of the plan you received, copy attached.
*
Lastly, VacationGuard® is not just a plan to use when things go wrong.* Inside of your confirmation of coverage was a link to Debix Identity Theft monitoring. You will see this gives you 2 gratis registrations for robust annual monitoring with Debix, protecting your identity before or as it’s being mis-used.* This alone is a $ 240 annual benefit, that is simply included in your $ 49 annual plan with VacationGuard via HGVC.* You must register on your own for this, via the link for Debix in your confirmation.
*
As respects claims, we pay the proportionate loss.* We cannot pay in points, but dollars, so we revert back to your annual dues.* For ease of math – lets assume annual dues are $1,000 (no late fees or assessments, which we don’t cover), and it gives you 100 points for that use-year, call it 2011.*
·******** If you use all 100 annual use-points on that trip, and cancel for a covered reason, we pay the lost dues if you can’t reschedule/re-deposit.... in this case, $1,000 in dues, plus FF re-deposit fees, or lost airfare.**
·******** Alternately, suppose you are using 50% of your annual use points between 2 trips, and one of them cancels for covered reason.* That would create a loss where 50% of your annual use-points were lost, or $ 500 in dues.* The good news is regardless of trips, our delay and medical benefits replenish with each trip, giving you exceptional protection for mere pennies a day.
·******** And, if you incur the loss of your check-in use-day from covered common carrier delay, we reimburse the one day of lost use/dues, in addition to the additional travel expenses from the delay itself.
*
You will quickly determine that for just $ 49 a year, Hilton allows you to access our benefit package worth over $ 400, which gives you tangible benefits.* Granted, nothing is perfect, and I’d be the first to tell you that insurance will never be perfect, but we try our best to design and deliver plans that will give you real peace of mind and solid value.* Have a wonderful travel year, and thank you for your feedback and comments.

It seems the big questions are:

1) What are "covered cancellations"? More importantly, what are NOT covered? I've reviewed travel insurance that have so many exclusions you almost have to die to get a covered claim.

2) Do they actually pay? How many hoops are involved in getting a claim paid and how long does it take to get paid? It's great to have good coverage but it has no value if the company doesn't pay.

You are absolutely right on with that. I told them I was posting their answer here as well as whatever happens if I need to make a claim down the road.
