I want to use this years pouints next May and will begin trying to schedule the unit in September. Am I required to notify HGVC that I want to use this years points or will that be done automatically. This is the first time I am using points from one year into the next. Thanks for your input.

You have to transfer the points forward first before using it. ($69 fee) You can do it online or call HGVC.

There is one way to use this year's points in the following year w/o doing a "rescue" or paying the rescue-fee...

From the RCI Portal --
"Current-year Points are eligible for travel in the following two years, when an exchange is confirmed or a search initiated prior to the expiration of Points..." (no point-moving is necessary)!

Thus, I soaked up the few points I had left for this year by booking an RCI resort in New Orleans for next Spring, and only paid the usual RCI-Exchange fee.

But I still suffer the pop-up ad for their point-protection program. <Arrrgh!>

Please check page 23 of the 2011 Member Guide regarding Point Stretching. If you have not yet used your 2011 points, the most efficient use IMHO would be to deposit them into RCI. This would give you two years to play with. There are some very nice resorts available. You can book it yourself on the website or have HGCV do an ongoing search if your destination of choice is not yet available.
