As Apple Prepares the iPhone 6, Here's a look at Mobile Market Share - by Geoffrey Goetz/ Android/ iOS/ Market Share/ Gigaom.com

"Prior to Apple releasing a new iPhone next month, I wanted to establish a baseline for the types of smartphones people use. The numbers showing what people use, especially in the US, can be very different than what manufactures make.

Smartphone market share information is very useful to developers as a guide to craft a mobile platform strategy, but understanding how to apply the data to such a strategy can be a bit confusing at times. The following will try to add some insight into the current numbers by adding some perspective behind each data source..."

Again I find it very interesting that while there are far more android devices sold then Apple devices, iOS still leads or is at worst tied with Android when it comes to actual usage whether it's pure internet usage or apps or uploading pictures. If you divide the actual real usage of the phones by the number of units that are currently out there one can draw the very reasonable conclusion that people greatly prefer to use iOS rather then Android. IMO the main reason people buy more Android devices is mostly purely economical in that they're frankly a lot cheaper and not because they prefer Android over iOS and the data seems to back that up.

Speculative question...

Not seeking to in any way enter or fuel the eternal, tiresome iOS / Apple vs. Android / Google debate, but I wonder about a "feature" issue potentially common to both:

Who do you think will be the first to introduce a "kill switch", introducing the capacity for a remotely initiated "complete disabling" of lost or stolen Smartphones? :ponder:

Despite my admitted techno-dunce knowledge level, it frankly amazes me that this particular feature hasn't been introduced and widely adopted long, long ago.

It's already available theo, in this case it's corporate demand driving the features, not consumer protection. Maas360

Yep, in order to connect our phones to my company's systems (email, etc.), the company requires us to configure our phones with apps that can remotely wipe our devices in case of theft, loss, etc. This protects any potential sensitive data.

There are apps available for all the major mobile platforms to do this.

I work at a nationally (US) known radio network, our statistics show that 60 to 70% of listeners to our Apps are iOS devices. Also downloads at the App store outnumber downloads at the play store by almost 2 to 1. The Apps are absolutely identical, we make sure of that. I can't explain it.

This has existed on Apple for years and I'm pretty sure it's a capability with Android as well.

With the find my iphone app I can remotely ring my phone even if the mute switch is turned on, I can send a special text message to the phone, I can locate it using its GPS capability on a map and if all that fails and if it's truly stolen and I never expect to see it again, I can remotely wipe all the data.

There's also a feature in settings where all your data can be wiped if somebody enters an incorrect unlock code a certain number of times. I have a 3 year old so I would never enable that feature.

The answer is simple, people who have iPhones actually use and enjoy their phones capabilities far more then people who have Android phones.

Or just tend to waste more time on the Internet than Android users... :)

I wonder how many iPhone 5's will suddenly hit the (eBay) market after the 6's come out and the ifans are dumping the old ones to offset their cancellation agreements?

It's all the same to marketers, isn't it? I've also seen the reports that show iOS users spend more online than Android users. You and I may consider that a waste of time, but I don't think the business community does.

If the last few years is any indication...many. I checked Amazon's trade in program this morning and they are offering a reasonable amount for my phone. Not sure if I'm buying a new one yet, since I really don't want a larger device. I'm holding off any decision until the product announcement.

LOL, only a joke guys... My desktop computer at work is a Mac, so I'm the last one to be taking sides on this.
