I'm in the process of researching new windows for our house. We'll be installing 4 windows & patio door during remodeling in the next couple of months with the idea of replacing all of our old aluminum windows within the next year or two.

I've been reading about and am fascinated by the 'self cleaning' glass. A titanium dioxide film is applied causing organic dirt to break down and not stick. Rain (or a hose) will sheet away any remaining dirt. This technology is new, 2001 from what I've read.

Is anyone familiar with the technology or have experience with these windows? I'm confused whether or not direct sunlight is required. Some articles say the chemical reaction needs 'daylight' and some 'sunlight' making no reference to direct or indirect sunlight.

I'm hoping I'll get a few enthusiastic endorsements :).

self cleaning ? it that for real?

Hello from a clean glass freak......We were told that yes, it is for real and it does work. This was from an Anderson Replacement Rep. Large ranch house with enough windows but not excess total number, price was over $30,000. Sales rep. was pushy and turned us right off. Still have "old" windows.

That's where I first heard about it...at a home show talking to a Renewal by Andersen rep. I almost burst out laughing until I realized he was serious. Another company said an additional $60 or so per window, so the only question is does it work? An does it required direct sunlight?
