Hi,

I have Sheraton Broadway Plantation, 2 bedroom. I would like to try to swap it win Interval for WKORV for Feb 2016. How does the Starwood preference work? How early is it recommende that I make a deposit and start a search?

I am a new owner, so sorry for the newb quesitons. The FAQ isn't quite clear on all of this.

Thanks in advance.

You are unlikely to get a Feb. exchange - that's high season, and in general, Starwood does not deposit high season weeks in II. They have complete control of what it deposited. If you are trying for President's week - that is just about impossible.

You have a much better chance of getting an off-season date - especially the fall.

Best practice is to pay your 2015 maintenance fee early, and deposit it, and put in an Ongoing Search immediately. You can't deposit, until you pay the MF. You can also use a 2014 deposit, if you have one.

Historically the months that are deposited are early January, late April, May, some early June, late August, September, October, and non holiday November, and December. If you become a member, you gain access to the Sightings board and can get a better idea about how many units, what sizes and when the deposits generally come. I would start your search at least 12 months in advance.

Intersting, we stayed at WKORV during president's week this year and had no issues scheduling, it wasn't very crowed either. Granted we were on a special offer from Starwood for $600 for the week, so maybe they had units set aside.

So, is the Starwood preference in II, pretty much worthless than?

No because without preference you are a lot less likely to get a 2 br unit and probably only have about 1/10th of the inventory that those with preference get.

Promotions through Starwood sales dept and even SVN inventory is not the same as II inventory. If you are flexible you can use a 1 br SBP unit to get a 1 or 2 br unit in Maui practically every year. Not really worthless but it is worthless if you can only travel during high season.

You are comparing apples to oranges: there are several different sources of inventory, and they do not cross-over. Your 5 night promo stay was not a II deposit, nor was it timeshare owners inventory - it belonged to Starwood.

Starwood has 100% control of what weeks they deposit in II, and their policy is not to deposit holiday weeks.

The Starwood preference is extremely valuable - but it has nothing to do with the dates available. With the Starwood to Starwood preference, Starwood owners get first choice of all dates that are deposited - but that doesn't change what is deposited.

Why would you think it is worthless? Without it, you more than likely won't get a II trade into a one or two bedroom at WKORV or WKORV-N.

We have exchanged our SBP 1 & 2 bedroom units into WKORVN for units in January (2x), February (2x), April (2x), November, and December. Some of the exchanges were for "mere" studios, but both of our April exchanges resulted in two bedroom oceanfront units.

Exchanging is somewhat random, meaning that there are no absolutes. As others have advised, put in an ongoing search early (now is not too early), and give Interval as many options as you can. You may get lucky.

Exchanging was easier in the past - since Starwood instituted Staroption banking, there is a lot less II inventory.

Exchanging was also easier during The Great Recession when many couldn't afford to travel (and resale bargains abounded). But my point was that there are no absolutes, that an ongoing search with the Starwood preference is the best way to snag WKORV for any week, and that the request may match.

I Agree, If you put in your ongoing search at a year out, you can get many exchanges that folks on this site deem impossible. Nothing is impossible if you pay your maint fees, put in an ongoing search and be patient. It's worth a try and you may just get it.

Good luck!

Not necessarily true. I put in requests for summer (late June through early August )at Harborside and Maui three years in a row at 18-24 months in advance using a 2 br platinum starwood unit mainly just to see if it would match. The earliest Maui ever matched was August 15-18 (week 33) So there really are impossible exchanges simply because the developer doesn't deposit those units in II. Harborside never matched in the week 25-33 range.

There is certainly no harm in requesting holiday weeks, but if that's ALL you request, you are likely to get nothing at all. I'd request all of January and February - rather than just President's week, for example.

Denise offers good advice - put in a request for all of January and February for best chances of getting a match in II.

If you can travel the first two weeks of January, there is usually availability then, at least via SVN. The rest of January and February will be a very long shot because it's whale season.
