I've been trying to figure out how to cancel a reservation online, is it possible, or do I need to call the 800 number?

Why wouldn't you just call the 800 number instead of even asking this question here?

I'd like to cancel, regain the points and use them at midnight tonight. However, it looks like all I can do is send email or wait until 9AM tomorrow. If I do that, the unit I want may not be available.

You can cancel online. It's one of the available actions when viewing your reservation on the first page after you log in to MSC. I don't know if your options will be available immediately, though, since you want to make a new reservation tonight. Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

If you cancel online on mystarcentral, the star options show up immediately, and you can use to make a new reservation. I just did this a week or two back.

Didn't show up in time...

My reservation didn't show up before midnight on the second night. I was unable to cancel the reservation and use the points.

As others have described here: Once the reservation shows up in your account, you can cancel it and reuse the points.

By the time our reservation did show up in MSC, the unit we wanted to reserve was long gone, and every other unit at WSJ was unavailable for our time period.

This is our first time trying out the online reservation system. It seems like our ability to reserve a week at a popular resort at 8 months is less likely now than ever before.

Probably already well discussed on this board.

WSJ is definitely hard to get in to -- it looks like literally one or two units left per night, and at least three of us fighting to get there first...

I have the same dilemma. I have a 2br rese at WSJ, I wanted to exchange for a smaller unit but I'm afraid to cancel and give it up coz then I might end up with nothing ...
